About Jan

I am currently working at Virginia Commonwealth University within the School of the Arts. I teach coursework as adjunct faculty that relates to the practice of Art Education in the K-12 setting. The coursework covers lesson planning, assessment, and professional practices.

I am also a certified K-12 Art educator. I have four years of experience teaching Art to K-5th grade students. Prior, I spent a year teaching art and English to primary students in Bangkok, Thailand. I have taught in diverse educational settings during my student-teaching days including Bangkok and the offshore island of Zanzibar, Tanzania. I've encountered and managed language barriers.

During my time in Thailand I tutored ESL students in reading, writing, vocabulary and conversation. As a trained art educator, I have developed creative lessons that connect to common core subjects. My teaching approach is meant to engage students to learn material in a creative manner. I find that by combining other subjects with art, students are inspired to learn and retain information as it becomes more meaningful and valuable. For instance, I've developed a number of lessons in which elementary students learn about American History and Symbols through the creation of pop up books, collages and paintings.

I offer a discounted tutoring session for our initial meeting so that we can meet to discuss your goals and aspirations. This meeting is also to see if I would be a good fit for your needs. I welcome feedback as an opportunity to improve and develop stronger lessons. After every session, you will have the opportunity to comment upon your experience with an online survey.

While I do have a 24-hour cancellation policy, I offer makeup classes. I can teach private lessons or small group instruction at my home where I store a wide array of teaching materials. However, I am happy to travel to another location if that is more convenient for the student.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you foster a love for learning through the arts.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified K-12 Art Educator. I currently work at two elementary schools in Henrico County. Prior to this, I worked in Bangkok, Thailand to teach 1st grade students ESL. During my time abroad, I also tutored many elementary aged ESL students reading, writing, vocabulary and conversation. I utilize my art background to create fun, interactive lessons to connect with my students. I believe that using this creative approach keeps students interested and engaged.

Handwriting

I will be teaching a nine week course for an after school program to improve penmanship with 3rd through 5th grade students. The focus of the workshop is cursive lettering. I have developed a curriculum to teach students how to master handwriting skills in an efficient way. Students will be engaged with learning the mechanics of cursive writing and be inspired to practice this skill.

Photography

I have a degree in Photography and Film from Virginia Commonwealth University. I have training in analog, digital and studio photography. I have experience teaching film processing and developing at an art intensive summer camp (CAT'S CAP) to elementary aged students and have also worked as a TA for a Darkroom Photography college course at VCU. I was responsible for teaching printing and processing techniques, maintaining the darkroom and providing feedback and support to photography students.
