About Devon

Hi! I'm Devon. I graduated with High Distinction from Amherst College in 2013 with a BA in English, and I am currently studying on the Shakespeare and Creativity MA at the University of Birmingham's Shakespeare Institute in Stratford-Upon-Avon. The course involves collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company, and one of our primary questions involves seeing what happens when we take Shakespeare out of the classroom and theatre and bring him to the world. I intend to complete a practice-based dissertation (and, ultimately, PhD) that explores the impact performing Shakespeare can have on people from disadvantaged backgrounds—specifically people who are currently experiencing homelessness and teenagers who have aged out of the foster care system. I've been awarded multiple scholarships and fellowships to undertake this research and have also been named a Fulbright Alternate for the 2017-2018 year.

In the five years since I graduated from Amherst College, I have had the privilege and pleasure of working with college students from around the world to help them improve their writing skills across the curriculum. I have worked with students studying remedial college English, with students writing senior theses at Amherst College, and with students at every level in between. My approach is always the same, regardless of the student’s level: determine the student’s needs, and then empower him/her through individualized instruction.

My primary focus for the past three years has been on designing and implementing individualized study plans for students with learning disabilities, students who are non-native English speakers, and students who do not believe they are capable of comprehending dense literature. This process has included conducting an intake evaluation, determining the student's strengths and weaknesses, and designing a supplementary curriculum that supports the work the student is already doing in the classroom.

In the six months after I graduated from Amherst College, I served as a teaching assistant for three English classes at Amherst. In this role, I mentored high-achieving students through the writing process. Most of the support I provided was on the level of ideas and argument formation. I also proofread an academic journal that has since been published.

My experiences with mentoring students through all stages of the writing process, from idea formation through final proofread, have instilled in me a passion and excitement for seeing students learn through writing. More importantly, I firmly believe that everyone—yes, even the student who cries when asked to write a 300-word response—has the capacity to enjoy writing. My goal is not only to guide students through the writing process, but, through that process, to help those students learn to see writing as an enjoyable means of expression, not a torturous punishment.

Writing mentoring is fun! The proof? My tutoring sessions always include plenty of laughter!

Thank you so much for visiting my profile. I can't wait to start working with your student!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
