Virginia Commonwealth University (Biology)
I recently graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with an Honors B.S. in Biology. I have taken many advanced biology, chemistry, and physical science courses. In the past year, I also worked as a Tutor for the university's own academic center. As a tutor, I learned how to not only provide assistance in learning the subject material, but also how to cater to each individual student to suit their learning style best as well as gaining a deeper understanding of the subject matter. Through this hard work, I was awarded Tutor of the Month by the academic center.
Since my major was Biology, I am proficient in various biology, chemistry, and physical science courses. These three subjects made up the bulk of my classes and I have tutored them before so I am experienced in teaching these subjects. But in addition to those listed, I am also proficient in various other subjects such as reading, vocabulary, pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, and even sports as well.
Because I like to tailor each session to the individual student so he/she can get the most out of it, I do ask that the student provide me with some basic information about their class and study habits just so I can gauge their proficiency in the subject. I also do not charge if the student is not satisfied with the tutoring session.
I am flexible in meeting times and locations. The session should be convenient for both student and tutor so I will try to accommodate for the student as much as I can. The primary goal is to help the student learn and I will keep that goal in mind and actively work to achieve it for all students. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to teach Elementary (K-6th) because of my previous academic and tutoring experience. I recently graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with an Honors B.S. in Biology. I passed both the Elementary Math and Elementary Science qualification tests on WyzAnt. I passed the regular science and English tests as well. I have one year of tutoring experience and it helped me learn how to deal with many different types of students. I learned the different types of teaching styles and I could use this knowledge and apply it. I have received training for two semesters on how to adapt to different students to ensure that the student becomes an independent learner. This would be one of my goals as a tutor for elementary children. Both my academic and tutoring experience will help me teach any subjects needed in Elementary (K-6th).
I believe I am qualified to teach Hindi because I am a native speaker. I am originally from India and have spoken Hindi for 22 years now. I am a fluent speaker and can read and write well. I have a good grasp of the vocabulary and grammar. In addition to my own learning, I also have study tools for any students who wish to learn Hindi, such as practice handwriting books and small passages for reading improvement. I can use my experience in Hindi to teach others effectively.
I am an avid photographer and I know about all the functions and features of a modern DSLR. I know the basics of photography including how to manage aperture, ISO, exposure, etc. I have a portfolio of photos I have taken online. I have taken a brief introductory class in photography in which I learned about the basics and I can use that knowledge to teach other potential students.
Through my education, I have been able to give many presentations and each one has helped me become more adept at public speaking. I know what an audience looks for and I can use that knowledge to help any potential students. I know I will be able to effectively help them get better and public speaking.
I have taken an 8-week class in which the first 4 weeks were about learning how to effectively speak in front of groups of people. The last 4 weeks were about presenting yourself well in an interview setting. These experiences taught me how to enunciate clearly, how to reduce the amount of filler words used while speaking, how to convey your message concisely, and how to present information effectively. I will be able to use the knowledge that I learned and help other students with it as well.
I have been a tutor at the Campus Learning Center at Virginia Commonwealth University two full semesters.
