George Mason University (Master's)
I hold a Master of Science in Telecommunications from George Mason University. My undergraduate work was in both Computer Science and Education.
Overall, I have four years of experience in college teaching of Information Technology as three years experience tutoring busy student-athletes in history, math, statistics, English, and computer science a one-on-one setting. I have worked with students with a variety of disabilities - including ADHD, autism, and hearing impairments. In addition, I have worked with a variety of skill levels and learning styles and I have the ability to adapt my teaching to techniques that work best for you!
I also have an art background. I have several years of formal education in art and I've taught photography, stop-motion animation animation, and color theory to junior high school students. This, combined with my Information Technology/Computer Science background, creates an ideal combination for teaching multimedia web development. Although I certainly also enjoy working with general computer problems as well.
I have a physical disability and, as a result, I use a wheelchair for mobility. I think it's important that you be aware of this because it may affect our potential meeting locations for tutoring. My preferred meeting location is within my own home.
I am primarily a tutor for computer-related topics and give priority to request in those areas. I have obtained approval in other subject areas because I have tutored a variety of fields and students with difficulty in one subject area often have problems in related areas. For example, a student that is learning to draw vector objects might also need to refresh basic math skills or a student with computer programming difficulties might need to review logic or spelling. I am, however, open to inquiries in all of my approved subject areas.
My hourly rate assumes little to no travel. I try to keep my hourly rate as low as possible so that students who want to learn the material are not hindered with a financial barrier. If you require more travel for our meetings, we will need to discuss a higher rate to cover my transportation costs. I hold a Master of Science in Telecommunications from George Mason University. Shelley is the absolute best. I needed help with a research capstone project for a graduate level course. The instructions for the project were very vague with little guidance. After my first meeting with Shelley, I walked away feeling very optimistic about the project. Shelley responded to my emails promptly and always made herself available for additional questions or concerns following our meetings. I earned an "A" on the project and I honestly don't think I would have if it were not for Shelley.
Our firm (a mid-size accounting firm) used Shelley's services to give additional training to two employees in Microsoft Office and general computer use on a weekly basis for several months. Shelley is very patient and was able to break down computer concepts so that they were easier to understand for our two employees. Both employees enjoyed their sessions and have vastly improved their computer skills which has translated in simplifying and speeding up their work. She was always on-time and very flexible. I highly recommend using Shelley as a tutor!
Shelley is a knowledgeable and patient tutor. She was responsive to my queries online and thorough in her explanations of Dreamweaver when we met in person. I appreciated her follow-up afterwards and willingness to share additional information that might prove helpful down the road.
Shelley's tutoring was very helpful to me as an IT and web design student. She was understanding and was able to offer a flexible tutoring time for me. Her tutoring, expertise in html, css and design has helped me to better understand my projects and overcome several difficulties in the technicalities of coding. The tutoring she provides is clear, concise and I highly recommend her to all students in need of coding or web design help!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught multimedia web development using Dreamweaver and Microsoft Expression Web for the past 3 years with CS5, CS6 and the Creative Cloud. I have advanced skills hand-coding in HTML 5, XHTML 1.0, and CSS 3, which compliments use of web authoring software.
I have a formal educational background in photography at both the high school and college levels and I was an instructor's assistant for a photography course within the DC Public School system. I generally focus on black and white and I utilize either a traditional 35 mm camera, a handmade pinhole camera, or a digital camera.
I find it's essential to have a good foundation of technical skills such as depth of field. After helping to establish these basics, I can assist you in developing an eye for composition either through use of my personal examples or a review of your existing work.
i have formal education in androgogy and pedagogy (how children and adults learn) as well as assessment. Combined with my experience tutoring and teaching, I will help you develop a lifelong skill of good study habits by providing hands-on tips to organize course material and determine ways to read and study that work with your individual learning style.
I have been teaching web design at the college level for the past three years. I am proficient with writing both XHTML 1.0, HTML 5, and CSS 3 manually as well as using MS Expression Web or Adobe Dreamweaver. I have an art background and a solid understanding of design concepts and current issues with regards to web design.
