About Rebecca

I have experience working as a math resource teacher in northern VA. I started the program in a small, parochial school and worked with students in grades 2-8. I use methods like "touch math" to help students with memory issues learn their facts and build confidence. I acted as the liason between parents and teachers, in addition to representing parents at IEP meetings which can be very overwhelming and intimidating to parents. With the money shortage in education, it is very difficult to convince an evaluation team/committee to spend the funds to move forward with testing after accommodations have proven to be unsuccessful.

I taught all the middle school math at a small/parochial school, including 6th math, pre-algebra, algebra 1 and algebra 1 honors for 3 years. It takes a special person to love teaching middle school and I do! I really enjoy this age group although it takes many different strategies to keep this age group engaged. I have taken courses and learned different ways students need to be taught based on their learning styles. Helping a student gain self-confidence in math and achieve success is what gives me the most JOY!

If you are looking for someone to motivate your child in math and remove their fear of math, then you have found the right person!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

Each year, including the current school year, I have at least 2 high functioning students with Aspergers. I am very good working with these students and am constantly studying and learning new teaching strategies. I have about 40% of my current students with ADHD. I also have two, college aged children with ADHD. I have spent years reading and learning methods to help students. I am very good at organizational skills which is so important for these students that struggle to turn in homework, etc.
