In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I hold a Master's in Elementary Education in PreK-6th grade from Old Dominion University with an endorsement in special education. I also tutor after school for students who need remediation and extra assistance with various subjects. I have two years of teaching experience at the third grade level and three years of teaching at the Pre-K level.
I am qualified to tutor in this specific subject because I have three years of experience teaching phonics to Pre-K students in preparation for Kindergarten. I also hold a Master's degree in Elementary Education with an endorsement in special education. I work with a variety of students at the third grade level in both general and special education programs and tutor these students in all subject areas. Phonics is one primary target area that many students require remediation services in order to boost reading level and comprehension.
As part of my educational background, I have experience in public speaking and presentation due to required coursework for completing my Master's Degree in Elementary Education. Public speaking is part of my daily position as a teacher in a sense as well. As an educator, I must be able to present to students, parents, and administrators upon request. This experience allows me to share pertinent information with individuals and teach students how to speak effectively in a public setting.
I currently teach 3rd grade for Richmond City Public Schools and work with students independently during after school remediation. During this remediation time, we review skills taught in class and concentrate on problem areas. Part of this remediation session is focused on teaching students various study skills which will provide them with a better opportunity of good performance during testing. These study skills are also taught during general education and repeated throughout the year.
