I am a recently retired science teacher from the Department of Juvenile Justice. I love to work with young adults and have been doing so for many years, even outside of school, as a church tutor. I relate to students very well as I try to keep up with events and trends they favor.I have a sense of humor and much knowledge of this age group, having worked with this group for last 14 years and having grandchildren in the teen years.
I am also very well versed in differentiated instruction as many of my children in DJJ were special needs with IEP's. This did not deter them from learning in that I quickly recognized their learning modality and focused on it.
In 2013, my biology students at DJJ had 90% passing SOL scores and Earth Science 87% passing. Only one from each course did not pass. Working at my new location, I've found it much tougher to get those kind o results, but have had more students passing my science SOL's than other core areas combined. I find this amazing, since these kids suffer many challenges.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught Biology for approximately 9 years off and on depending on need. I have with Department of Juvenile Justice last seven years and some years only teach Environmental Science, Earth Science. I've taught Biology he last two years and feel quite prepared to tutor genetics, one of my favorite concepts.
