Passion: Helping students understand and enjoy a subject area is my passion. I live for the "aha" moment when they "get it" for the first time and that day when I have a formerly math-hating or math-a-phobic student smiling and laughing as they work.

Experience: I am finishing my PhD in mathematics and science education with a dissertation studying undergraduate mathematics peer tutors at a local university and am active in a national research group studying best practices for post secondary mathematics learning centers. My passion for tutoring began when I worked in the drop-in tutoring center during community college tutoring all math through Calc I, English/Writing, and Speech/Communications. I also worked at a Kumon Math and Reading center with students as young as kindergarten and have worked as a freelance tutor for math, general study skills/all subjects with clients ranging from elementary school students in need of remedial help to older adult graduate students returning to math or stats after many years. I have worked with students from public, private, and homeschool backgrounds successfully and make sure to keep parents "in the loop" as full partners invested in the student's learning. I have been the teaching assistant or instructor of record for college level classes ranging from business statistics, to math for the liberal arts, to the calculus sequence and differential equations.

I have also taught 4-H dog training classes before - nothing phases me after fifteen 8-16 year old 4-H members with their completely untrained dogs show up on the first night! Training dogs and teaching kids to train them has taught me a great deal about how we learn and how to motivate learning on a very practical level.

Further Qualifications: I earned a double-degree in Mathematics and Cognitive Science (the study of how we think, learn, process, remember, and solve problems) with a 3.9+ GPA, and went on to earn a Master's of Mathematics, and then return to school to earn my PhD in Mathematics and Science Education (dissertation topic: undergraduate mathematics peer tutors).

Elementary Education

Common Core,

Common Core

I have taken coursework covering the teaching of preservice mathematics teachers in a Common Core adopting state. Additional coursework has included research, reading academic studies, and critiquing academic studies of mathematics teachers and students including studies on Common Core and its implementation in the classroom.
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

My strategy with younger students is a lot of math and strategy games and activities as well as fun drills to teach arithmetic facts, in addition, of course, to helping with the current coursework. The goal is to have a student that is comfortable, confident, and competent with patterns, numbers, and operations to prepare them to think logically and numerically and to be ready for algebra and geometry later on.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

When a student is struggling with mathematics, the problem is rarely the problem. Failures in Algebra, Calculus, and beyond are usually not due to the content of those courses, but an important connection or understanding that was missed in an earlier class. I work with students to help them keep up with their current work while also identifying and correcting the underlying problems. Math is basically patterns, and the patterns get more complex and build off of each other over time. I often play pattern-finding and arithmetic games with students to help them learn to think in patterns and solidify the basics so they are building on a good foundation. I find that playing math games also helps students with math anxiety learn to relax and enjoy the subject.

ACT Math,

ACT Math

Acing the ACT mathematics test is about more than knowing math - it is also about being a good, strategic test taker, overcoming math anxiety, and having enough math and logic experience to deduce the correct answer even if that formula or method has been long forgotten. My tutoring emphasizes knowing "why" a math technique works and building student confidence to help them avoid choking and silly mistakes.

I received an "A" in differential equations in college.

Discrete Math

I aced discrete math as an undergraduate, and through both undergraduate and graduate level coursework have demonstrated proficiency in all areas of discrete mathematics.

I received "A" grades in both mathematical and philosophical logic and have extended both through continuing courses in mathematics, computer science (including artificial intelligence), and philosophy.

Simply the best!

Thank you, Katie for accommodating my 7th grader extra need of review for her midterms to your busy schedule. You made her feel confident and ready to take the test. She is on top of her class because of your help. My other daughter is also holding on her own with the 5th graders. She always takes home perfect scores! You are the best!

We continue to be impressed!

Katie continues to impress us with her enthusiasm, patience, and creativity. Furthermore, her sense of humor and kind nature have put my son (and the rest of our family) at ease. My son looks forward to his next session and is always upbeat about them afterwards. Her detailed reports following the tutoring sessions are insightful and helpful.

Beyond Thankful!

We feel incredibly lucky to have found Katie to work as a tutor with our son. She made Algebra I fun for him! He actually looked forward to tutoring time because he had such a good time and learned a lot. In only four hour and a half sessions, his grades climbed from an F to a B. Katie was extremely patient and creative in her teaching techniques. She took the time to learn about his interests and would weave them into the sessions. In addition, she even took the time to explain the math to me (after the time was up!) so that I could help if necessary. (As it turned out, he knew it well enough not to need my help.) That was definitely going above and beyond! Katie is personable, funny, intelligent, and a pleasure to work with. Her summaries of the lessons were very well written and helpful. We are still playing the math games that she introduced. I offer my highest recommendation to Katie for her excellent teaching ability and professionalism.

Thank you, Katie B.!

Last fall my son, a high school senior, asked me to find him a tutor for calculus. This was the first time he's ever made such a request, so I knew he was overwhelmed. My younger son was being tutored by a Wyzant tutor at the time, so I looked there and found Katie B. And what a find she was. Patient, kind, and hard-working, if you have a smart kid having trouble with calculus, Katie B. is the one to call.
