About Charles

Hi Everyone!

My name is Charles, Mr. Charles, or Chuck; but you can call me your future tutor. I am a 2011 graduate of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics with a concentration in Business Administration. I started college at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS for my first 2 years of college, fell in love with Economics, and transferred to LSU for their more intensive Economics program (Geaux Tigers!!). I now live in Richmond, VA, and tutor mostly in the the Greater Metro Richmond Area. I have tutored economics, statistics, college-level algebra, and calculus students for nearly a decade.

Most education isn't necessarily about learning ideas applicable to your life/career directly (not many lawyers use Calculus on a regular basis, nor do Most medical doctors have to speak on the steps of photosynthesis in detail, Haha)...but how one handles adversity when examining complex and abstract problems. In my opinion, Poise and composure when problem solving is the most valuable skill one can sharpen in a school environment.

My goal is to find ways to help students UNDERSTAND FOR THEMSELVES the subject matter they are presented in class. I PERSONALIZE and CUSTOMIZE the help I give to each student such that the CONCEPT is understood and can be applied thereafter in the proper situations. Learning how to understand information in a personal way directly helps one become more effective in any situation of importance.

Lagniappe Credentials:
I have been actively involved in tutoring, mentoring and coaching sports with youth since 2006. I worked as Teachers Assistant (TA) for an experimental statistics class in college at LSU. While at LSU, I tutored statistics to high school and college level students.

I have taught 50+ year old officers at rural churches how to use MS Office to make auditing and checking bank records easier...And I have shown 9 and 10 year olds how to use MS Excel Pivot tables and formulas to show graphs of bake sale revenue. Age of the student isn't a factor in my willingness to work with a given student.

*****CRAMMERS and SIDESTEPPERS BEWARE: I AM A TUTOR and Awesome-Person-Extraordinaire in my opinion, NOT A CRAMMER ASSISTANT...If you need help understanding a subject(s), I will work tirelessly to help find a way for that light bulb to turn on in your head, even if the help doesn't come directly from me. If you need help the day before/of a test or anything that is "last minute", I cannot and will not guarantee the results I know are capable of my skills and most effective methods. This is primarily because I need to be able to track the effectiveness of the student. I can still help with tutoring, but I reserve the ability to change the rate of my help, sometimes dramatically.******

Do you have any questions for me? Please ask me about anything that crosses your mind concerning my motivations or instructions styles. I pride myself on being an open book and someone who is willing to earn the trust and respect of those I encounter.

Hope to Hear from You Soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Economics

-I have a Bachelor of arts in economics from LSU. I've completed 2 years in predictive statistical analysis roles, and 8 years tutoring various undergrad and postgrad economics courses in Louisiana Mississippi and Virginia. I have a genuine fascination with the subject matter.

Football

I played strong safety/rover for Jesuit High School in New Orleans, LA (2003-2006) under Vic Eumont. I tore my ACL before senior season of high school. I walked on as an athlete for the University of Southern Mississippi in 2006. I have coached youth football from 2008 to the present, with expertise in linebackers and defensive backs. I have been Defensive Coordinator with 7th-8th grade students (12-14yr olds) of Clover Hill Bulldogs Athletic Association of Chesterfield Quarterback League in West Chesterfield, VA since 2012. Under my helm, we lost 4 games in 2 years with (1 loss coming in the championship game, 2 of the others the championship winner that season). I have been offered opportunities to coach on the high school level, but I have declined those opportunities to help instill the love of football in kids before they get to the high school level.

I currently use a 4-4 stack scheme for my defense such that I can give my smart yet not supremely athletic players an opportunity to attack the run-oriented offenses we face.

I pride myself on making sure I coach fundamentally sound players that give maximum effort and learn to expect greatness out of themselves such that they hold themselves to the highest standard.

Defensive Minds I follow: Vic Eumont, Bud Foster, Gary Patterson (all coaches who teach discipline to achieve superior results rather than solely depending on superior athleticism to accomplish the same end).

Microsoft Word

- 15 years of experience and extensive use of the entire MS Office suite.
- 9 years experience instructing adults to high school students with various learning styles.
- Taught 50+ year old officers at rural churches how to use Word and Excel to make auditing and checking bank records easier.

Saxophone

I have played e-flat alto saxophone for 17 years, including playing with different jazz sets throughout the Baton Rouge and New Orleans areas. I have also performed in some of the smaller tents at JazzFest, and I would be more than willing to help anyone who has the desire and wants to develop the practice habits and listening skills to improve and play different styles.

Statistics

- Worked as Teachers Assistant for experimental statistics class in college.
- Tutored statistics to high school and college level students for 5 years.

Track & Field

I participated in track and field for 7 years including high school athletics and trained with current Harvard University school record holder Jarvis Harris in the 110 meter and 60 meter hurdle events.

Great Business Stats Teacher — Charles was a great teacher for my college level business statistics class. I enjoyed his repetition of practice examples and how he was able to explain concepts in simple terms and then build up the analysis. His willingness to have tutoring hours at later times at night, and still being energized so the sessions were boring, was appreciated. I improved my test score after two sessions of tutori ...
