Latin,

Latin

Latin is not a dead language! It is the vibrant thread woven into most languages spoken in the Western world today. Learning Latin provides the foundation for expanding understanding of English vocabulary and is especially helpful to high school students who are considering careers in law or medicine. I have been tutoring students in Latin since I was the President of the Latin Club in high school -- and now I have my doctorate! I simply enjoy instilling a passion for this beautiful language and encouraging students to see Latin as a tool to unlock more doors to their future.

There is a reason why some people call Statistics "Sadistics"! It can be very confusing and frustrating if you don't have someone who can guide you through the intricate maze of concepts and terminology. Personal tutoring allows a student to ask questions and stay on track before they become too lost to know even what to ask. Tutoring also enables students to see the big picture without getting lost in the trees of numbers and Greek letters. Don't go it alone in Statistics!

Writing an SAT essay is like baking a cake. I give you the flour, sugar, eggs, butter and encouragement to create an essay that will stand out from the rest! You make it your own with the flair of your personal frosting. I help you with the basic ingredients and show you how those ingredients MUST be in every essay -- no matter what the SAT topic may be. When you finish working with me, you will be able to bake the cake (write the essay) with confidence and creativity!

My doctoral degree was earned at one of the most respected seminaries in the United States - Columbia Theological Seminary - in 2011. Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Understanding Algebra is the key to unlocking all of the math and science doors throughout high school and college. A solid understanding at the beginning will make the later courses less difficult. I guide students to think of Algebra as a game -- something to be enjoyed and not feared. Once they see it as a "solve for x" puzzle, students become more confident and less intimidated by Algebra. One-to-one tutoring allows students to play the game with someone outside of the peer-pressured classroom. Less stress -- more learning.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

Algebra I and II are the foundational building blocks for math and science courses in high school and beyond. I help students to see math problems as workable puzzles and replace the fear with confidence that every puzzle can be fun. Attitude is a key to unlocking the joy of math.
Geometry,

Geometry

Simplifying Geometry is my specialty. One of the basic keys to understanding Geometry is to keep it simple. It all boils down to circles, rectangles and triangles. Once you understand these three shapes, all others are just combinations of these three. I take the fear out of Geometry by reminding my students about how to stay focused on the basics.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

Prealgebra is the springboard for diving into the big pool of high school math and science. You can learn how to swim with variables early or you can wait and sink later on. Take early lessons by having one-to-one confidence-building tutoring sessions with a pro who can help you navigate the deeper waters of math without feeling overwhelmed. Soon you'll be loving the water of Algebra rather than fearing it!

SAT Math

Would you enter a very important competition without first training for it? The SAT is a competitive test for colleges to determine who to pick as incoming freshmen. Tutoring can give a high school student the edge to stand out from the crowd and shine so that many colleges will make offers. Personal coaching is the most effective way to prepare because I teach proven SAT test-taking strategies and subject content. I also provide prep materials that are not available in stores to the general public.

My daughter is smiling again!

When my daughter dissolved into tears trying to do her Geometry homework, I knew we needed help and Joy came to the rescue! My daughter was absolutely thrilled to have someone explain the subject matter in a way that she could understand and then run with it. I couldn't believe I heard my daughter giggling and saw her smiling while she was doing math!

Joy was knowledgeable, thorough and prepared!

I feel a lot more confident now that I had session with Joy and she explains things in a very understandable way. I definitely would refer Joy to my friends and use her again.

Best math tutor ever!!!!

Joy is extremely positive, patient, and easy to work with! She explains difficult math /statistics/ PRAXIS 2 content, in a way that makes me wonder, where has she been all of my life??!! I have had many "AHA" moments while working with her. If she was my math teacher in elementary, or middle school, I would not have had the lifelong struggles with math, that I have had to endure! She explains things in a simple, understandable way. Even if you think that math is like Mandarin Chinese, as I always have, you won't feel that way after working with Joy! If I could give her a rating of a "bazillion," I would!

Amazing

Joy was amazing and my daughter totally felt at ease and comfortable working with her. She took the time and understanding needed to help guide Kayleigh to improving her SAT score. We are however waiting on the new results but have no doubt that with Joy's help and guidance she did in fact improve. We will definitely use Joy in the future should the need arise again. A 5 plus star tutor for sure! Thank you Joy!

Extremely knowledgeable, awesome tutor

I've been studying the ELA and Science part of the Praxis exam and she's been doing a fantastic job of explaining things and offering different strategies and tips. Highly recommended!

Awesome Tutor!

Joy helped prepare my daughter for her Geometry SOL. Although she only had one lesson with Joy, I truly believe she passed because of her. I would recommend Joy to anyone who needs help to prepare for a test or to improve their grade.

The best math tutor on the planet

I am extremely math challenged and need to take the Praxis Core math test for my teacher licensure. I've had a few tutors give up on me-I was giving up on me. She meets you where you are, doesn't give up until you get it and makes it fun. Well...not that fun.

Diana, 9 lessons with Joy

Gifted, talented, and insightful tutoring partner

Joy is truly unsurpassed in her ability to not only teach difficult concepts, but to ensure that the student learns them. Her session was clearly critical to an excellent outcome on a major exam.
