About Joy

As a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), I tutor as a hobby because I enjoy helping young people learn to love numbers and am specially trained in SAT math tutoring, which covers all basic math topics and test-taking strategies. Although math is my specialty, I also am certified to tutor SAT Reading and Writing, Latin, English, public speaking, essay writing, and reading comprehension. I take the time to tutor because I believe that one-to-one learning is most effective in helping students who may be intimidated to ask questions in a peer-pressured classroom setting. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

As a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), I am qualified to tutor all levels of college accounting courses.

Algebra 1

Understanding Algebra is the key to unlocking all of the math and science doors throughout high school and college. A solid understanding at the beginning will make the later courses less difficult. I guide students to think of Algebra as a game -- something to be enjoyed and not feared. Once they see it as a "solve for x" puzzle, students become more confident and less intimidated by Algebra. One-to-one tutoring allows students to play the game with someone outside of the peer-pressured classroom. Less stress -- more learning.

Algebra 2

Algebra I and II are the foundational building blocks for math and science courses in high school and beyond. I help students to see math problems as workable puzzles and replace the fear with confidence that every puzzle can be fun. Attitude is a key to unlocking the joy of math.

Simplifying Geometry is my specialty. One of the basic keys to understanding Geometry is to keep it simple. It all boils down to circles, rectangles and triangles. Once you understand these three shapes, all others are just combinations of these three. I take the fear out of Geometry by reminding my students about how to stay focused on the basics.

I have tutored several GRE students.

Latin is not a dead language! It is the vibrant thread woven into most languages spoken in the Western world today. Learning Latin provides the foundation for expanding understanding of English vocabulary and is especially helpful to high school students who are considering careers in law or medicine. I have been tutoring students in Latin since I was the President of the Latin Club in high school -- and now I have my doctorate! I simply enjoy instilling a passion for this beautiful language and encouraging students to see Latin as a tool to unlock more doors to their future.

Since October of 2011 I have been tutoring a student in preparation for the Praxis (PPST) exam so that she can become certified as a teacher. We have worked almost every week for six months. I believe that I am completely familiar with all of the requirements for Praxis and would like to request that I am certified as a Praxis tutor.

Prealgebra is the springboard for diving into the big pool of high school math and science. You can learn how to swim with variables early or you can wait and sink later on. Take early lessons by having one-to-one confidence-building tutoring sessions with a pro who can help you navigate the deeper waters of math without feeling overwhelmed. Soon you'll be loving the water of Algebra rather than fearing it!

Public Speaking

I have completed the Toastmasters International training course. I was an active forensics champion (debate and extemporaneous speaking) in both high school and college.

My doctoral degree was earned at one of the most respected seminaries in the United States - Columbia Theological Seminary - in 2011. I am an ordained minister and have taught courses at the seminary level. After recovering from cancer, I now tutor while I am serving as Executive Director of a not-for-profit corporation.

SAT Math

Would you enter a very important competition without first training for it? The SAT is a competitive test for colleges to determine who to pick as incoming freshmen. Tutoring can give a high school student the edge to stand out from the crowd and shine so that many colleges will make offers. Personal coaching is the most effective way to prepare because I teach proven SAT test-taking strategies and subject content. I also provide prep materials that are not available in stores to the general public.

SAT Reading

I show students how to critically analyze not only reading passages but also related questions.

SAT Writing

Writing an SAT essay is like baking a cake. I give you the flour, sugar, eggs, butter and encouragement to create an essay that will stand out from the rest! You make it your own with the flair of your personal frosting. I help you with the basic ingredients and show you how those ingredients MUST be in every essay -- no matter what the SAT topic may be. When you finish working with me, you will be able to bake the cake (write the essay) with confidence and creativity!

There is a reason why some people call Statistics "Sadistics"! It can be very confusing and frustrating if you don't have someone who can guide you through the intricate maze of concepts and terminology. Personal tutoring allows a student to ask questions and stay on track before they become too lost to know even what to ask. Tutoring also enables students to see the big picture without getting lost in the trees of numbers and Greek letters. Don't go it alone in Statistics!
