As a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), I tutor as a hobby because I enjoy helping young people learn to love numbers and am specially trained in SAT math tutoring, which covers all basic math topics and test-taking strategies. Although math is my specialty, I also am certified to tutor SAT Reading and Writing, Latin, English, public speaking, essay writing, and reading comprehension. I take the time to tutor because I believe that one-to-one learning is most effective in helping students who may be intimidated to ask questions in a peer-pressured classroom setting.

Joy helped prepare my daughter for her Geometry SOL. Although she only had one lesson with Joy, I truly believe she passed because of her. I would recommend Joy to anyone who needs help to prepare for a test or to improve their grade.
I am extremely math challenged and need to take the Praxis Core math test for my teacher licensure. I've had a few tutors give up on me-I was giving up on me. She meets you where you are, doesn't give up until you get it and makes it fun. Well...not that fun.
Joy is truly unsurpassed in her ability to not only teach difficult concepts, but to ensure that the student learns them. Her session was clearly critical to an excellent outcome on a major exam.
She was very patient with my son. I am very confident that she has help him gained a better understanding of Algebra 2.
She knows the subject and is organized. She set us up with a study plan and we completed everything in a timely manner. She took time to make sure we understood everything, and gave us hw to practice outside of tutoring. She really does help, and I give her a 100%!!!! She also does great at building your confidence and helping you be prepared!
Joy is simply the BEST! I cannot believe she has made my experience of re-visiting math for the first time in 10 years not only do-able and approachable, but actually enjoyable!!! (I am a visual artist who has held a lifelong fear of mathematics!) She has a great upbeat personality that is wonderful to be around, she is extremely articulate in getting across complex math themes, while being patient. She is genuinely a gifted tutor and lovely person.
I am so confident that I am going to pass this math praxis. With Joy, I just can't lose! She renewed my love for math, because she explains the concepts in ways that I understand. I'm truly grateful!
Joy is an amazing tutor. Our first session was very good. She came with materials that she thought I should use to prepare for the Praxis. Before I wasn't very confident about taking the test and now I am super confident that I will pass. She is a great tutor and I recommend her to anyone!!
Joy is wonderful. Madison always feels confident and has a good understanding of the subject. Madison is very happy to have Joy as her tutor.
Joy taught me how to find solutions on a graph and how to identify a graph when it is shown to me. I enjoyed how she taught me using a white board instead of using the calculator all the time. I truly enjoy learning from Joy.
Joy H. helped me break down the problem and apply different tactics that I hadn't thought of before. The most helpful thing she taught me was about ratios and multiples. Her strategy helped me solve the problems.
Joy is a wonderful tutor. Very patient and encouraging in helping our daughter with her Geometry and helping her build her self confidence.
We are very happy with the services that we are getting from Mrs. Joy.
My daughter has had math tutoring in the past but I have to say there is a wonderful difference with Mrs. Joy's tutoring.
First, she takes her time and explains the concepts and doesn't move forward unless there is a full understanding of the concepts. She is very patient with my daughter and has done a marvelous job building the relationship. My daughter also stated that Mrs. Joy keeps her interested in Geometry.
After each session, I ask my daughter if she has learned something new and the answer is yes then she explains what she has learned.
Every session has been value added and rewarding. We are excited about continuing with Mrs. Joy. She is truly God sent.
Joy is an INCREDIBLE tutor. I wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone and everyone who wishes to improve their knowledge of math! Would definitely choose her again!
So far, my lessons with Joy have been going very well. She has taught me strategies and tips to ace the SAT test that I've never learned anywhere else. Joy is kind and passionate about her tutoring which makes her really focus when she's teaching. She is also excellent at explaining different approaches to problems so you can have a choice of which one you want to use. I can't wait to see my scores boost up because of Joy. I highly recommend her and definitely look forward to sharing my experience with her to my other friends and family so they can tutor with her too!!
Mrs. Heaton has my daughter focused on test taking strategy which is critical for success. She has a great approach, setting goals upfront and applying a very structured program to help achieve those goals.
Joy's confidence in her teaching materials and calm, measured coaching approach were greatly appreciated by both our son and his parents. After retaking the S.A.T. within two months of the first test, he increased significantly his math scores and his reading score went up even more. We highly recommend her.
Very knowledgeable and patient tutor. She is extremely kind and willing to put in any time and effort in order to help you succeed.
Our daughter wanted to improve her Math SAT scores. Joy is an expert at this. With just a few sessions my daughter is already feeling more confident and doing much better on practice tests.
We specifically looked for a tutor who can help with our 11th grade daughter, who is an overall strong student, prepare for SAT essay in a short period of time. Joy did an excellent job in communicating what is important in SAT essay writing and how to produce a good essay consistently. Those tips were very valuable. She also reviewed my daughter's work and gave her feed-backs. My daughter only had 3 lessons with Joy, but these 3 lessons gave her much confidence. We are very glad we looked for an SAT essay tutor on WyzAnt and found Joy.
I would like to add that my daughter just found that she got 790 in SAT writing, thanks to Joy!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Understanding Algebra is the key to unlocking all of the math and science doors throughout high school and college. A solid understanding at the beginning will make the later courses less difficult. I guide students to think of Algebra as a game -- something to be enjoyed and not feared. Once they see it as a "solve for x" puzzle, students become more confident and less intimidated by Algebra. One-to-one tutoring allows students to play the game with someone outside of the peer-pressured classroom. Less stress -- more learning.
Algebra I and II are the foundational building blocks for math and science courses in high school and beyond. I help students to see math problems as workable puzzles and replace the fear with confidence that every puzzle can be fun. Attitude is a key to unlocking the joy of math.
As a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), I am qualified to tutor all levels of college accounting courses.
Simplifying Geometry is my specialty. One of the basic keys to understanding Geometry is to keep it simple. It all boils down to circles, rectangles and triangles. Once you understand these three shapes, all others are just combinations of these three. I take the fear out of Geometry by reminding my students about how to stay focused on the basics.
I have tutored several GRE students.
Latin is not a dead language! It is the vibrant thread woven into most languages spoken in the Western world today. Learning Latin provides the foundation for expanding understanding of English vocabulary and is especially helpful to high school students who are considering careers in law or medicine. I have been tutoring students in Latin since I was the President of the Latin Club in high school -- and now I have my doctorate! I simply enjoy instilling a passion for this beautiful language and encouraging students to see Latin as a tool to unlock more doors to their future.

Since October of 2011 I have been tutoring a student in preparation for the Praxis (PPST) exam so that she can become certified as a teacher. We have worked almost every week for six months. I believe that I am completely familiar with all of the requirements for Praxis and would like to request that I am certified as a Praxis tutor.
Prealgebra is the springboard for diving into the big pool of high school math and science. You can learn how to swim with variables early or you can wait and sink later on. Take early lessons by having one-to-one confidence-building tutoring sessions with a pro who can help you navigate the deeper waters of math without feeling overwhelmed. Soon you'll be loving the water of Algebra rather than fearing it!
I have completed the Toastmasters International training course. I was an active forensics champion (debate and extemporaneous speaking) in both high school and college.
My doctoral degree was earned at one of the most respected seminaries in the United States - Columbia Theological Seminary - in 2011. I am an ordained minister and have taught courses at the seminary level. After recovering from cancer, I now tutor while I am serving as Executive Director of a not-for-profit corporation.
Would you enter a very important competition without first training for it? The SAT is a competitive test for colleges to determine who to pick as incoming freshmen. Tutoring can give a high school student the edge to stand out from the crowd and shine so that many colleges will make offers. Personal coaching is the most effective way to prepare because I teach proven SAT test-taking strategies and subject content. I also provide prep materials that are not available in stores to the general public.
I show students how to critically analyze not only reading passages but also related questions.
Writing an SAT essay is like baking a cake. I give you the flour, sugar, eggs, butter and encouragement to create an essay that will stand out from the rest! You make it your own with the flair of your personal frosting. I help you with the basic ingredients and show you how those ingredients MUST be in every essay -- no matter what the SAT topic may be. When you finish working with me, you will be able to bake the cake (write the essay) with confidence and creativity!
There is a reason why some people call Statistics "Sadistics"! It can be very confusing and frustrating if you don't have someone who can guide you through the intricate maze of concepts and terminology. Personal tutoring allows a student to ask questions and stay on track before they become too lost to know even what to ask. Tutoring also enables students to see the big picture without getting lost in the trees of numbers and Greek letters. Don't go it alone in Statistics!
