About Matthew

I love the discovery one finds in learning. I come from a family of teachers, and started teaching on a volunteer basis in 2007, as a computer skills teacher to 3rd-5th grades. Years later, I've shifted too tutoring in writing and religious studies, my passion of passions in academia. I'm the three time winner of the Twin Beach Playwriting Festival, and a professional playwright, though I practice all creative, persuasive, and expository writing. I was awarded the Departmental Honors in Religion in 2014, and have made it my life's pursuit to discover all I can about every religion, who they are, who they were, what they believed, and why.

As a writer, I have years of experience. I am a professional playwright, with plays performed in Baltimore, Annapolis, Fredericksburg, and along the East Coast. I won the Twin Beach Playwriting award three years in a row, and self-published my first fantasy novel at the age of 12. I have also published several original poems in cultural anthologies. I was also the official Youth Poet of the Diocese of Maryland for six years.

I graduated from the University of Mary Washington cum laude with Departmental Honors in Religion. I served a year in Baltimore for the Episcopal Service Corps, seeing Religion make history even as I studied the effects it made on the past. I always try to know everything I can about every religion, whether through my unique library of religious manuals handed down from Religious Professors, or by talking to different people to understand what religion means to them.

If interested in a lesson in any English, Writing, or Religion subject, I would be excited to hear from you, and happy to set up a lesson. I prefer to meet online, in a library or coffeehouse or other public place.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I graduated cum laude from a religion major at the University of Mary Washington, earning Departmental Honors in religion for that year. I have studied the bible with Atheist scholars, liberal and conservative priests, as well as Jews and Jewish-Christians, and understand many different ways the bible is understood today. During my High School senior year I did an independent study on the historical origins of biblical texts, writing a college-length thesis. I have a large private library of biblical study academic and religious texts, many formerly belonging to priests, rabbis, or religious professors.

Religion

I graduated cum laude with a major in Religion and Departmental Honors in Religion in 2014 from Mary Washington.
I often approach experts, be they influential priests, bishops, religious professors, and especially average joes-to discuss opinions on current and ancient religious history, to try and understand the current public opinion on religious questions.
I spent a year in the Episcopal Service Corps, learning the current global politics, of not only Christian but several religions.
I have a large library of religious studies textbooks, many belonging to my professor's private libraries, and study them during my free time.
