About Brett

I've been playing for 36 years, and teaching for 26. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Music Education, and a Master's (with honors) in Jazz Performance, so YES, I can teach you jazz. :) I've played in orchestras, jazz ensembles, ska bands, even a jazz-punk band, and done extensive studio work, and I bring all of that to my lessons.

I believe in saying "yes' to every musical opportunity. By doing that, I've opened myself to a wider musical world, and had amazing experiences. I encourage my students to do the same.

My style of teaching is to constantly reinforce the fundamentals of playing and musicianship, while keeping the atmosphere light and fun. My standards are very high, but that doesn't mean I squash you for making mistakes. We're human, it happens. A mistake is a chance to sharpen our skills, and sometimes the best moments in the lesson come right after a stumble.

If you want to be first chair, let's do it. If you want to learn to play a jazz solo, let's get to work. If you're retired and want to learn an instrument, I'd love to help you. I'm looking forward to helping you achieve whatever goal you have.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education, which includes extensive ear training. I am an experienced jazz musician, which requires active aural skills. I have taught my students for 20+years ear training skills as a part of their regular lessons.

French Horn

I am a brass teacher of 26 years, with a degree in Music Education, which included extensive Horn work. Additionally, as a brass specialist, I know that the mechanics of brass playing do not change from piccolo trumpet all the way to tuba, so I can pick up and brass instrument and play. Also, I have been teaching horn students for over 20 years, many of whom were very successful in their school programs.

Music Theory

As a lifelong musician, and Masters Degree holder, I have extensive experience in harmony, ear training, form and analysis, and composing/arranging.

Trombone

I've been a professional musician for 30 years. I've also been teaching brass instruments for 26 years. I also hold a Bachelor's degree in Music Education. I've had many successful trombone students over the years.

Trumpet

I've been a professional trumpet player for 30 years. I've also been teaching trumpet (and other brass instruments) for 26 years. I also hold a Bachelor's degree in Music Education.
