About Lila

I have been teaching Latin, both as a private tutor and in the classroom, since 2008. I have a B.A. and an honorary M.A. in Classics from Cambridge University, as well as an M.A. in Writing for Young People from Bath Spa University in the U.K. I love working with young people whether it is to turn frustration into comprehension or comprehension into mastery. Most of the students I have taught or tutored medal in the National Latin Exam, and all who have gone on to higher-level Latin have scored a 4 or higher on the AP exam. These successes are only a benchmark of what I consider truly important: providing the opportunity for young people to develop a deep appreciation for the subject.

My thorough grounding in Latin and my passion for literature also make me an excellent tutor in English. Whether you need help analyzing and understanding a book for you English class, organizing and writing an essay or term paper, or simply solidifying your knowledge of English grammar, I am able and happy to assist you. I connect well with all kinds of students at all levels from beginners to advanced. Because I have a passion for learning, and because I have a dyslexia-related disability myself, I am able to approach each student as an individual with unique needs. Remember, when life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade! Make life take the lemons back!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Classics

My undergraduate degree is in Classics from the University of Cambridge, from where I also hold an honorary MA in the same subject. My love of the Classics began when I was very young, and I have pursued it ever since. My areas of particular interest are tragedy, linguistics, and philosophy. I have read and translated many texts, from Homeric Greek, Attic Greek, and Latin, and I am familiar with the works of Herodotus, Livy, Pliny, Tacitus, and Suetonius.

English

I have been an avid reader from an early age, and am familiar with a wide range of literary styles and periods. I not only understand but enjoy the idiosyncrasies of English grammar and their proper and effective use. I hold an MA in Writing for Young People, and am comfortable with persuasive and expository essay writing. As a student I achieved a perfect score on the verbal section of the SAT and fives on the AP English exams.

Grammar

As a student I achieved a perfect verbal score on the SAT. I am well-read and a proficient writer with a thorough grasp of both elementary and advanced English grammar. I also, thanks to my background in Latin, am able to understand and explain many of the idiosyncrasies of our language. I am happy to help both beginners and those preparing for college level composition.

Latin

I began studying Latin when I was 11, continued throughout high school, and used it extensively during my undergraduate career as a Classicist. I have translated many classical works, from De Rerum Natura, to the Comentarii de Bello Gallico, to the Satyricon. I am proficient in both prose and poetry. I am happy to work with students to provide whatever they need, be it the rote memorization of declension endings, or poetical and thematic analysis of the Aeneid.

Literature

I am a voracious reader of both fiction and non-fiction, and in high school scored fives on the AP English exams. Thanks to my background in Classics, I have a broad and extensive familiarity with the roots of Western literature and because of my MA in Writing for Young People I am also keenly up-to-date with modern publications. I can help students grow comfortable with and enjoy the analysis of literature.

Proofreading

I am well-read, detail-oriented, and have an thorough knowledge of grammar. My Master's in Writing for Young People equipped me to be an excellent proofreader, as I was required to read and correct the proofs of manuscripts which were going to the publishers. Apart from bare-bones corrections, I encourage students to become familiar with and abide by the rules of composition laid out in Strunk and White's "The Elements of Style".

SAT Reading

Did you know that over 60% of all English words have Greek or Latin roots? Thanks to my background in the Classics and my extensive knowledge of English vocabulary, I can help your student to gain the verbal mastery he or she needs to excel on the reading section of the SAT. Exploring the roots of words and comparing them to common, related derivatives can be a huge help for those working to improve their reading.

SAT Writing

As a student I achieved a perfect score on the verbal section of the SAT. My background in Latin gives me great insight into the origins of grammar, and I am adept at helping students develop an "ear" for correct English usage. Through fun and quirky examples, I can help you learn to spot and correct common types of grammatical errors and make the rules of writing accessible.

Vocabulary

As a student I achieved a perfect score on the verbal section of the SAT. My background in Latin, Greek, and French provides me with enormous insight into the etymology of English, and my voracious appetite for reading has equipped me with a broad vocabulary. My delight in the English language helps students to go beyond mere memorization and to appreciate and utilize new words in day-to-day life.

Writing

Because of my Classics background, I have a wealth of experience in writing both persuasive and expository essays. I also have a Master's in Writing for Young People, from which I learned not only how to write creatively, but to analyze and edit. I emphasize clarity of communication and simplicity of style.

Lila quickly diagnosed where my son's problem area was -- retaining a huge volume of vocabulary -- and suggested a strategy that will help him (who has ADHD /Phonosonic processing disorder) to turn ST memory to LT knowledge. He does a very short Skype session every week day and a regular session on the weekend. His quiz grades have improved tremendously. After the first session, my son immediat
