About Diana

I am a native German and have been living in the Washington metropolitan area since early 2014. As an experienced instructor, I am eager to share my enthusiasm and knowledge with you at the level of study you desire.

In December 2013, I graduated with a Master's Degree in Cultural Studies and German Literature at Humboldt University of Berlin and Free University of Berlin–among the five most prestigious universities in Germany according to the World University Ranking of Times Higher Education.

During the course of my studies I worked as a research assistant. My assistance in helping students prepare for their exams and enhancing their scores has been recognized as exemplary. Bolstering students’ chances for success is something which I found personally rewarding and motivational. I assisted in several courses and lectures covering a variety of topics ranging from the history of technology to philosophy.

Right now, I am an Adjunct Professor of German at Montgomery College.

With more than 1000 hours of teaching German in person and on-line, my competency has been recognized by my students and other teaching professionals. I am adept at developing and implementing curriculums, managing classes, and preparing students for language assessment at all proficiency levels (ILR tests, tests at Goethe-Institut and Berlitz). I believe it is important to help my students to advance their understanding of the German language and the German culture simultaneously.

If you need assistance in any of the following subject areas, I can help: a) German studies at any level, b) European History (18th, 19th, 20th century), c) study skills, and d) philosophy (Discourse Analysis, ANT).

I am confident that I can aid in attaining your study goals and look forward to working with you.

PS: You may wish to consider flipped classroom instruction. If so, for options, rate details, and offers, see my resources and read „Diana's Rate Details and Options“.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

European History

I am convinced that very little of history can be understood in isolation. Rather, there is a culmination of numerous factors waiting to be discovered, an exciting endeavor that is fun and causes understanding. I will help you to get to know the context of historical events and relate history to your own life in our modern world. Understanding of the larger context will help you remember facts easier. I hold an M.A. in Cultural studies (major) from the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Cultural History and Theory in Berlin defines itself as both a historical and material-oriented analysis of mainly European cultures, reaching from antiquity to the present. My published research focused on the history of cultural technologies and on the history of knowledge from the 18th to the 20th century.

German

I am a native German speaker with considerable experience in teaching German to students from varied backgrounds---from total beginners to advanced students; from business and government to private classes; and from age 1 to 77.
I am an Adjunct Professor for German at Montgomery College and a Berlitz Total Immersion-Certified Coach for German.
Language learning in my lessons is characterized by a balanced mix of immersion (we spend as much time as possible speaking/listening/writing in German) and grammar explanations in English. That way, I effectively help students to increase their levels and to get prepared for exams.
Last but not least, I always try to make my lessons as enjoyable as possible.

Philosophy

Close reading, critical thinking, reasoned argument, and concise writing are the most important skills in philosophy. I prepare my students to reach their full academic potential while enjoying philosophy as an intriguing and rewarding discipline. I specialise in French Poststructuralism, Discourse Analysis and the History of Knowledge. I have worked in great detail on Michel Foucault, Michel Serres, Bruno Latour, and Martin Heidegger.

Study Skills

Study skills are substantial part of each subject that I am tutoring. I work with students not only to expand their knowledge, but to teach them HOW to learn more deeply and with less frustration. I have gained knowledge of study skills based upon my own experience as both a tutor and a student at the university. Recently, I have earned a certificate (with distinction), "Learning How to Learn“ by University of California, San Diego . I will teach you how to learn more effectively, even in complex and hard to grasp subjects like German grammar or Heidegger's “Being and Time”. You will immediately get useful perceptions that will help you to master your subject in a sustainable way.
