About Mike

I'm a trained engineer (PhD Aerospace Engineer in compressible flow) with more than 30 years of professional experience tackling problems, ranging from large scale vehicle dynamics to digital signal processing to big data analytics in cloud deployed Hadoop clusters. I welcome the opportunity to work with you to develop your academic and real world skills.

My philosophy is to start with theory and finish with practical solutions. I apply this to everything I have done and it forms the basis of my approach to teaching. So, if you want to learn not only what but how, I can make that happen.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I took honors algebra in the eighth grade which launched my love of mathematics. One of my goals in tutoring is to do the same for others. Because algebra is so foundational, I focus on basic concepts enforced by applied drills.

Algebra 2

I tutored algebra II as a senior in high school winning kudos from both students and parents alike.

Calculus

As an engineer, I have employed the fundamentals of calculus for more than 30 years. I bring this experience to each student I tutor to aid students in not only understanding the theory but grasping the application.

My goal is to provide each student with the tools to use calculus and move onto advanced topics should they wish.

Geometry

Geometry is to mathematics what art is to culture. This forms the basis of my approach to tutoring geometry. I bring together the rigor of logic and the wonder of shapes to enable students to learn and even appreciate geometry.

Precalculus

Precaculus is the first step of the journey in mathematics. It is the foundation of even the most advanced topics well beyond calculus. My experience both in academics as well as my professional career enable me to both teach the concepts and theory of calculus and bring it to life. This ensures that the student's understanding of the subject is well grounded and that the student is well prepared for calculus and topics beyond.
