Steve's knowledge, skills and abilities as an outstanding, motivating and confidence building tutor are demonstrated in three key areas including: (1) his extensive tutoring background in Math, Chemistry and Physics; (2) his ability to understand and connect with a student’s abilities and concerns through listening, understanding and patience; as well as (3) his analytical and engineering background.
Steve is especially strong in PSAT/SAT/ACT Math, Chemistry, and Physics; numerous math topics such as: Algebra I & II; Geometry; Pre-Calculus; and Calculus; as well as various summer AP Chemistry and Calculus AB/BC work packages, etc. He worked extensively with his son and daughter at an early age to build up their math and science foundations and confidence which resulted in them both being accepted at and attending TJ (Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Technology). In addition, he continued to tutor them both in math, chemistry, and physics throughout their high school years which resulted in them both attending top universities; the University of Virginia and Columbia/Yale respectively.
Steve prides himself in his subject knowledge, tutoring skills and his ability to explain topics in terms a student can understand. To achieve this, Steve knows he has to truly understand a student's needs and concerns. He also prides himself in being an excellent listener that has a keen sense of where a student is at within the topic and what is required to move forward. Two key goals that Steve has are to ensure a student understands the "why" behind the solution to a math or science problem and to ensure they are "comfortable" with the subject to the point where they can tackle a problem from scratch on their own.
Steve enjoys tutoring as a second career, is passionate in passing along his knowledge and insight, and is looking forward to providing tutoring that meets your needs. He has over 6 years of professional tutoring experience in Math, Chemistry and Physics at all levels. Stephen has been a wonderful tutor for my son in Honors Geometry. He has a wonderful way of explaining the material so that my son could figure things out, and if he did not know something (usually because my son's teacher gave obscure problems), Stephen would work on it and drop if off at the house after the lesson. He has gone above and beyond to work with our crazy sports schedules and when we needed extra help in preparation for the final, he worked additional sessions into his busy schedule. Stephen really helped my son build up his confidence in a subject that was not his favorite.
My daughter has met with Stephen for a few weeks now and I already see an improvement in her grade and overall understanding of the concepts she is learning. Overall, he's a great tutor.
Steve was a terrific tutor for my son in the lead up to final semester exams in 12th grade, when my son took a particularly rigorous course. Steve really pounded home all of the concepts in a very fast pace for review, and covered all of the material. My son succeeded! I would highly recommend Steve for tutoring needs at any level.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
