About Stephen

Steve's knowledge, skills and abilities as an outstanding, motivating and confidence building tutor are demonstrated in three key areas including: (1) his extensive tutoring background in Math, Chemistry and Physics; (2) his ability to understand and connect with a student’s abilities and concerns through listening, understanding and patience; as well as (3) his analytical and engineering background.

Steve is especially strong in PSAT/SAT/ACT Math, Chemistry, and Physics; numerous math topics such as: Algebra I & II; Geometry; Pre-Calculus; and Calculus; as well as various summer AP Chemistry and Calculus AB/BC work packages, etc. He worked extensively with his son and daughter at an early age to build up their math and science foundations and confidence which resulted in them both being accepted at and attending TJ (Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Technology). In addition, he continued to tutor them both in math, chemistry, and physics throughout their high school years which resulted in them both attending top universities; the University of Virginia and Columbia/Yale respectively.

Steve prides himself in his subject knowledge, tutoring skills and his ability to explain topics in terms a student can understand. To achieve this, Steve knows he has to truly understand a student's needs and concerns. He also prides himself in being an excellent listener that has a keen sense of where a student is at within the topic and what is required to move forward. Two key goals that Steve has are to ensure a student understands the "why" behind the solution to a math or science problem and to ensure they are "comfortable" with the subject to the point where they can tackle a problem from scratch on their own.

Steve enjoys tutoring as a second career, is passionate in passing along his knowledge and insight, and is looking forward to providing tutoring that meets your needs. He has over 6 years of professional tutoring experience in Math, Chemistry and Physics at all levels. His BS in Civil Engineering Technology from Virginia Tech is complemented with a MS in Operations Management.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

Steve is especially strong in ACT Math and has worked with numerous students for more than six years now in this topic. Not only does he tutor ACT Math basics such as word problems, geometry, percent's, , ratios, probability and logic problems, etc., he has also covers test taking techniques and strategies. He has numerous worksheets available to cover this topic and desires to really get to the "why" and "how" behind a math question so that the student can work similar problems on their own when they take the ACT.

ACT Science

Steve understands that the ACT Science section is really ACT Science reading (to include graphs, tables and charts) and that there are questions in three different formats. He knows that while general knowledge of a topic is useful, it is not necessary because all of the information needed to answer a question is given within the material presented. To help you succeed in this area, Steve has a lot of worksheet material and handouts in order for you to get plenty of practice in the three types of ACT Science questions. He has worked with numerous ACT Science students over the past six years helping them achieve their goals.

Algebra 1

Steve is especially strong in Algebra I and has worked with numerous students, many who have interests in going to AOS in Loudon County or TJ in Fairfax County, for more than six years now in this topic. He works with the students skills and abilities in mind as he explains the Algebra I topics. He has numerous worksheets available to cover this topic and desires to really get to the "why" and "how" behind a math question so that the student can work similar problems on their own. To date several of his students have reached their AOS and/or TJ goal.

Algebra 2

Steve is especially strong in Algebra II covering a wide variety of topics from complex fractions to graphing to quadratic equations to conics. Factoring techniques for complex quadratic expressions such as grouping and/or slide and divide are covered in detail. Analyzing polynomial graphs to determine vertical, horizontal and slant asymptotes as well as end behavior is also covered. Numerous worksheets are available to cover this topic in detail that Steve can give to the student for practice. Ultimately the goal is to have the student gain the confidence to work any Algebra II problem on their own.

Calculus

Steve is especially strong in Calculus and has worked with numerous students for more than six years now in this topic. He works with the students skills and abilities in mind as he explains the Calculus topics. He has numerous worksheets available to cover this topic and desires to really get to the "why" and "how" behind a Calculus question so that the student can work similar problems on their own.

Chemistry

Steve has worked with numerous Chemistry students over the past six years, covering a great variety of topics ranging from significant digits to the periodic table and element characteristics to stochiometry and the gas laws. Steve has numerous handouts available to explain energy, ions, balancing equations, redox reactions, equilibrium and pH as well as sample AP and SAT II Chemistry subject test material. Other handouts address ionic and covalent bonding as well as bonding shapes. Steve has been successful in helping numerous students reach their Chemistry goals.

Geometry

Steve is especially strong in Geometry covering topics from straight lines, to triangles to circles to proofs, etc. He takes the approach that developing strong skills when taking Geometry will translate into improved PSAT, SAT and ACT Math scores later. Steve's tutoring skills and abilities have been sharpened by over six years of experience working with numerous students. Steve prides himself in determining a student's current skill level so that he can take the best approach in moving forward. He has numerous worksheets available to cover this topic and desires to really get to the "why" and "how" behind a Geometry question so that the student can work similar problems on their own.

Physics

Over the past several years, Steve has worked with many Physics students covering topics from simple kinematics to gravitation and kinetic energy to electricity and waves. Other topics in between have included forces and momentum as well as angular motion and torque. Even topics such as dynamics and statics have been covered. Steve is ready to help you achieve your Physics goals whether in the topics listed above or in another topic such as point charges, astronomy, or nuclear physics. He has numerous worksheets available to cover this topic and desires to really get to the "why" and "how" behind a Physics question so that all of his students can work similar problems on their own.

Precalculus

I am especially strong in Precalculus to include Trigonometry and have worked with numerous students for more than six years now in this topic. I have covered various areas to include simplifying and graphing polynomial expressions as well as solving exponential/logarithmic equations and the graphing of them. My background in Trig covers all aspects from graphing to Trig Identities to Trig Equations and even includes Inverse Trig as well as other areas such as the Law of Sines, Law of Cosines, etc. Other areas of Precalculus include Polar Coordinates, Sequences and Series, Binomial Expressions, etc. I have numerous worksheets available to cover these topics in order ensure the correct approach and knowledge is passed to the student. My goal, of course, is too ensure all problems can be solved from scratch by the student on their own.

thorough tutor

Steve was very friendly and thorough. He had good suggestions for activities my daughter could cover on her own after the tutoring session. Steve was responsive and flexible in setting up a tutoring session. He explained differences in terminology from teacher to teacher and why that might be confusing to students.
