I spent 25 years teaching and tutoring in a variety of settings from private boarding school in MA to public school in NH and VA as well as student teaching in England. Since I feel that teaching students is more important that any one subject, I taught all core subjects and all the grade levels from K to 12. I have strengths in Math and Science as well as writing but my primary asset is my ability to help students organize information, plan studies and break down complicated, intimidating material into manageable bites.
My strength in one-on-one tutoring is in my ability to related topics to thing that make sense in the world of the kids I help. I can explain Algebra like a lunch table and relate cellular biology to how a household functions. Additionally, I am able to remain calm and unflustered when students are frustrated or anxious about the work they have to complete. We work together to break down topics, celebrate the learning we do from mistakes, gain confidence from small successes and build toward full scale understanding.
I taught math to grades 2-10 with many years experience in pre-algebra and algebra. I have developed many ways to explain tricky concepts and I know why it's important to learn certain things in ways that will help make later learning easier. I can address most math concepts in multiple ways making them accessible to hands-on learners as well as those who need to hear and see directions, and talk out their practice and problems. This allows me to help every child develop confidence and skills.
I retired from full time teaching a few years ago and now I run a farm with horses, chickens, Air BnB rentals and I make crafts to sell at the farm stand. I have many interests and ways to connect with students outside of the the traditional school subjects and topics. And since I work from home, I am generally fully flexible with my time. Finally, in this era of COVID precautions, I keep myself very safe, always wear a mask and do not take unnecessary risk in travel.
