About Janet

I have been teaching adults to read English for 15 years. I have at times also tutored elementary school children in reading and writing. Even while obtaining my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, I enjoyed tutoring other classmates in various topics and I’d enjoy helping you reach your goal of reading, speaking, or writing better.

I have worked with both small groups and in a one to one setting. My students have ranged from people who were just learning their letters to those who were reading at an 8th grade equivalent. In all cases, the adults I’ve helped had not been reading at a level where they want to read and they have all made improvements. My students primarily come from two different backgrounds: native English speakers and ESL/ESOL students fluent in another language and learning to speak and/or write English.

The native English speakers could have missed a skill early on that has made reading difficult or they have a learning disability such as dyslexia . Many times these students have had the goal of obtaining their GED and so much work involves the GED topics.

The ESL/ESOL students have often wanted to focus primarily on their speaking and conversation skills. Once they have become better at having a conversation, they often want to learn to read and write in English.

If any of these sound like you, I have the skills through my past experience and continuing training to help you. My number one goal for all tutoring sessions is that you learn something in a fun and memorable way. It doesn’t mean it isn’t work, but you’ll learn the tools you need to figure out how to pronounce a word you’ve never seen. We’ll also work on making sure you understand what you read. After all, just being able to read the words doesn’t mean much if you can’t understand what you just read. Once I learn what your interests and goals are when you read better, the material we work with will be more tailored to you. From the beginning you will be making improvements.

For those students interested in ESL/ ESOL, I lived in Germany for two years and learned German. I know first-hand the challenges of learning to speak, read, and write a new language as an adult. I’m here to help. I was also the American speaker for a group of German ladies who wanted to improve their spoken English.

Please contact me and we can begin your journey to reading, writing and speaking better together.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

While at a community based organization in Connecticut, I used the Wilson Program extensively for six years. This program was designed to teach individuals with Dyslexia to read. By introducing new material in a structured format, we were able to measure that a student had mastered a skill before introducing a new skill.

ESL/ESOL

While living in Germany I was one of two English speakers for a group of Germans who wanted to improve their English. I am also currently teaching two people to read English who have recently learned to speak English.

GED

I teach adults to read and several of them have the goal of getting their GED. I use GED related material in the reading class so not only are they learning to read better but they are learning topics they will need for the GED.

General Computer

I have taught many individuals computer basics such as turning the computer and screen on and off, how to use a mouse, how to search the internet, setting up an email account and sending and receiving emails. My strength lies in my patience. For many individuals unfamiliar with technology, it takes more than once to master a topic. I'm just the person to show Mom and Dad what to do with the computer so they can see pictures of the Grandkids. If you're not careful, they may even end up on Facebook!

Phonics

I have nine years experience using Reading Horizon to teach adults to read through a community based organization in Virginia. Reading Horizon is a phonics based program. My students love the skills they learn through the program as these skills allow them to sound out new words with a high degree of accuracy.

Reading

I have used the Wilson Program for many years. It was developed to teach people with dyslexia to read but I have used it with non-dyslexic students also and it works great. It is a structured program that introduces topics in prescribed order to help with the learning process.

Please contact me if you are interested to scheduling a convenient time.

We have completed two session for my eight year old son. She quickly assessed his current reading level and incorporated relevant activities into his lesson plan. Janet has identified a great method encourage his desire for reading. Her approach to teaching makes my son comfortable and looking forward to the next session.
