I enjoy the challenge of teaching and helping explain things in new ways that help kids get past difficult concepts that just aren't connecting in school. I especially enjoy helping students look at math as more of a puzzle to solve rather than a formula to follow. As a kid who struggled with elementary math and eventually overcame the difficulties, I have a good idea of the mental blocks that kids have when it comes to math. I understand the feeling of "I just don't get it" and "it doesn't make any sense", and I know the kids who say that are capable of excelling with a little help.

I took BC Calculus in high school and continued to take several advanced mathematics courses in college including linear algebra, differential equations, and multivariable calculus. I spent a year in Boston tutoring elementary and middle school children in math. In particular I focused on helping students prepare for the MCAS in grades 4 and 5. I did both in-home tutoring as well as at the local library. A typical lesson would involve reviewing homework or assisting with unfinished homework, preparing for upcoming tests with custom created practice tests, and addressing problem areas that arose during review. Where appropriate I incorporate math games such as Challenge 24 or manipulatives such as counters or 3D paper constructions to illustrate math concepts.

In addition to a passion for math my career is in software engineering. My main focus is the field of web development. I graduated from University of Virginia with a bachelor's degree in computer science. I have a background in PHP, C#, C++ , Python, Javascript, HTML/CSS, and bash programming.

I also have over 18 years of experience teaching dance (tap, jazz, and swing) to both children and adults.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Calm, cool, collected

Michael is a great problem solver! He helped me work through some python issues in minutes, when I'd been stressing over them for hours! Very personable and a great resource. I'm looking forward to continuing our lessons together.
