About Derek

I absolutely love helping people understand math better. I have been tutoring math since my sophomore year at Virginia Tech--eons ago.

I have been a 'numbers person' all my life. I enjoyed math as a kid. I majored in electrical engineering in college. I enjoyed tutoring college math, engineering, and calculus during my days at Virginia Tech. After graduation, I worked as an engineer for a few years before returning to school. Some of my favorite moments were in helping high school students in math and adults prepping for the math portion of professional certification tests. In graduate school, I focused on innovation and product development in high tech industries, requiring a heavy dose of quantitative courses in business, engineering, and math. It was always a pleasure helping classmates figure out tough quantitative and analytical problems. Post MBA, I worked in product development in leading technology companies. While helping create industry-leading and award-winning products, I developed an interest in US student mathematics performance. I began tutoring math more frequently and eventually taught middle school math for a few years.

Currently, I tutor middle school mathematics (math 6, math 7, math 8, pre-algebra), high school mathematics (algebra 1, geometry, algebra 2, math analysis, algebra/trigonometry, pre-calculus, calculus), college prep (SAT math, college placement math test prep), ASVAB math prep, and college math (college math, pre-calculus, calculus).

I have been told that I am great at making the complicated and difficult easy to understand and comprehend. I am irreverent, sarcastic, and wacky. I like to 'torture' my students while making learning fun. However, I insist that my students work independently and exhaust all options before trying to use me as a crutch just because 'I can make it easy'.

Please feel free to contact me to learn more about how I may be able to assist you and to schedule lessons.

Wow! A thank you doesn't seem an adequate response to such a heartfelt compliment and endorsement, but thank you so much! I just do what I do, and that's to try to figure out what works and then communicate what works in a way that's understood. Again, wow and thank you!

"A swell guy!"

- Anne, Petersburg, VA on 11/18/16
Derek replied on 11/22/2016

Anne,

Thank you so much for the compliment. And thank you for choosing me as your tutor. It's been a pleasure to work with you all. I'm thoroughly enjoying our sessions. Your husband is a great student and I love the challenge of helping him to see that he understands far more than he believes he does. Furthermore, his instructor is providing him with challenging and thought-provoking questions that help me sharpen my skills, especially my ability to interpret the goals of any assignment and translate those goals into language that students easily comprehend.

Thanks again,

Derek

Lamont is a bright kid with great energy. He only needed a few hints to unlock all that ability. He'll be leading the class in no time at all!

"1st Session Success."

- Ronaver, Petersburg, VA on 10/9/16
Derek replied on 11/3/2016

Thanks Ronaver. Kaleb is a very bright kid. Brighter than he understood because that calculator was a crutch. Hopefully, he's rolling along in class now.

"Patient with a Teenage boy who "didn't need any help"

- Melanie, Chesterfield, VA on 9/20/16
Derek replied on 9/22/2016

Thanks Melanie. James is actually a joy to work with. He's a very bright kid and I look forward to helping him eliminate those small little mistakes with which he "didn't need any help" but which often add up to big obstacles to understanding, performance, and achievement.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
