About Lynn

I'm Lynn, but my younger students call me Ms. B., and my older students call me Professor B. As a passionate educator, I've worked with students from kindergarten through college in the areas of writing skills, reading skills, public speaking, study skills, and organization.

I'm a licensed teacher with over ten years of experience. I've worked for one of the best school districts in the country as a Literacy Coach, and I've recently moved back to Northern Virginia. When I work with students, I try to identify why the individual is struggling? Then using that information, I create customized lessons and materials to help each student find success within that area. My goal isn't to just help the student with the content, but to learn skills and strategies to become a more effective learner. This is true for elementary through college; I've worked with all the above.

I prefer to work online, so I can be available more frequently, but I'm also available to meet face-to-face. For both persons' safety, I prefer the first meeting within a public place (library, Starbucks, etc). I have a very respectable reputation from hundreds of students over the years, and I'm looking forward to developing new opportunities through tutoring services.

Because I have a very structured approach with direct instruction and use the learning style that meets each student's needs, I've had excellent success. In fact, I've had 98% of my students pass their state-mandated tests and college placement exams in both reading and writing. For writing, I use a backwards approach. I teach organization first and then structure, and finally details. It helps students not feel so overwhelmed with the idea of a blank sheet of paper. For reading, I help students decode words, identify meanings through sentence structures and clues, increase their fluency, and improve their comprehension.

Please feel free to contact me to learn more. You can also see my profile through social media and business networking sites. On a personal note, I've traveled most of Europe and love to explore new cultures. In fact, my profile image is from Amsterdam. If you have any questions, I'm here to help. If I don't know the answer, I'll be honest and find the answer.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

Working with students with ADHD or ADD can help them identify strategies they can utilize to be more successful in the classroom and work environment. From hyperactivity to inattention, there are known methods I've implemented in my classrooms and have helped hundreds of students gain academic and organizational success. I received a MA in special education from Virginia Commonwealth University and have been working with special education students with a license in special education from the state of VA for the last ten years.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Most students with Autism Spectrum Disorder struggle with social cues, communication, and social appropriateness. With my calm and consistent approach, I've established trusting relationships with students and have helped them identify strategies to allow them to access the real world. For mild autism, we (the family and I) develop a plan, implement the plan, and modify as needed. This might be for eye contact, self-advocacy, or environmental structure. For more severe autism, we (the family and I) focus on methods and strategies for effective communication with the outside world. We examine behaviors and help the individual recognize those behaviors and change them for more societal acceptance.

I received a MA in special education from Virginia Commonwealth University and have been working with special education students with a license in special education from the state of VA for the last twelve years,

Elementary Math

While my specialty is reading, I have assisted elementary students with mathematics. This begins with memorizing facts and ends with pre-algebra. I focus on helping students work through the math and understand why the process makes sense to solve it. In addition, I teach students the importance of number line up, showing their work, and checking their answers backwards.

English

I've been teaching various English courses over the last ten years to students in high school and college. I focus on organization, structure, and mechanics, which allows students to feel supported with their future assignments. I begin by assessing a current writing sample, so I can identify areas for improvement, and then I provide direct instruction, practice, and implementation of the skill within general writing.

ESL/ESOL

I've worked for FCPS and have helped hundreds of ESOL students improve their English skills and develop communication competence. As a Literacy Coach, I've developed systems for teachers to utilize within their classrooms to assist students' English development. From conversational to academic English, we have to understand how the language is developed, used, and modified. This begins with pure sentence structure and vocabulary. As we increase vocabulary, focusing on usage and clarity helps ESOL students acclimate in school and in society.

Public Speaking

Helping students improve their public speaking skills begins with basic lessons that help an individual improve the manner that they are perceived. Then, developing a structure with methods to help an individual sound confident, organized, and interesting.

I have a Master's degree in communications and have taught public speaking at both the high school and college environments. I'm currently teaching communications courses at CSUMB and have taught them at various universities. In fact, I've taken my high school students to state competitions due to winning local, district, and regional competitions within various areas of public speaking and debate.

Reading

Reading has many facets that impact effectiveness, but the greatest resource that we can use to improve any reading skill is interest in the subject. When working with students who want to improve their reading abilities, we begin with high-interest materials and support strategies that help the student understand the material to a deeper level with greater comprehension. This might be a simple summary, or it may entail a thorough analysis of understanding how text is used to convey information.

As a college professor, literacy coach, and high school reading teacher of ten years, I've helped hundreds of students gain reading improvement. I have a MA in special education and have focused on literacy in my post-graduate studies and professional experiences. As a Literacy Coach, I supported the teachers with strategies to help students at all levels gain a deeper understanding and increase comprehension.

Writing

Writing is a unique skill that needs to be taught directly. Many teachers assume that if you give someone a pen, they can write. But the reality is, there are many structures that help students succeed in writing. This includes organization, paragraph development, sentence structure, and grammar. I've been teaching academic writing over the last ten years through various college and high school classes and have been very successful with helping students graduate and attend college.
