About Marcia

I was born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela and am fully bilingual in English and Spanish. Teaching is in my genes as there are educators in my family as far back as I can trace. When I was younger, I enjoyed teaching pre-school and first grade, and later middle school. More recently I have run a reading fluency program for first through sixth grades, written and edited Spanish textbooks, and taught adults English and reading and writing in English.

Recently transplanted to Virginia after 23 years in Texas, I am very much looking forward to tutoring. Teaching is so much fun: there is nothing better than that moment when a student "gets it". As a tutor, I can tailor all lessons to the particular needs of each student. I have significant experience working with learning differences although I do not have Special Education certification. Issues of pacing, multi sensory input, and the appropriate amount of repetition can be attended to in a tutoring situation in ways they can't always in a very diverse classroom.

As a bilingual person, I have an understanding of what cross language and culture issues. I have taught various levels of adult ESL as well as to elementary-age students. This has included a multi-year reading and writing class for English language learners. I have a good understanding of the pronunciation and grammatical challenges for English learners.

For four years, I taught in and ran a reading fluency program for an elementary school that included vocabulary, and writing.

Not only am I a native Spanish speaker, but through my multiple years of writing and editing Spanish textbooks, acquired knowledge of the pedagogy of second language instruction.

Please consider contacting me with any questions you have about my background or qualifications and to figure out if my skills are a good fit for your tutoring needs.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
