About Edwina

Hello, thank you for visiting my profile! You are here because you, or your student, need help with reading and/or English, and I am just the teacher for you! I have been a literacy educator for over 20 years, and have had my own tutoring business for the last five. My love for reading began in childhood. I would sit, books all around me, reading for hours. When I was about 10, my mother told me that my great-grandmother was illiterate; I broke down in tears. I asked how she was able to get what she needed from the store, my mother replied, “She looks at the pictures on the labels.” This moment changed my life. I decided that I would help people learn to read.

Fast-forward 15 years… I am an English teacher, and later a Reading Specialist, dedicated to teaching those who struggle with words. My students range in age from 7 to young adult. I know how stressful it can be to want to read and write well, but can’t. My training in literacy education has given me the tools to support my dedication to helping others. I assess skills, develop lessons, use strengths to support weaknesses, build confidence through successes, and enhance literacy knowledge. Wherever my student is on the literacy spectrum from “looking at pictures” to “making mind movies” with words, my goal is the same: to teach and enrich. I intend cross-curricular application.

I have a lifetime teaching license for English in NJ. I earned a BA in English, and a MA in Curriculum and Instruction with a Reading Specialist concentration and state certification. I am passionate about helping people improve their literacy skills. I specialize in and develop lessons for reading, vocabulary, writing, and thinking skills. I also help students with writing research papers and essays. I guide them through the writing process when composing research papers and essays.

I work with each student according to his or her support needs. It may be to support literacy achievement throughout the year, or just for support during a novel unit. We work together to establish the type of assistance needed by the student.

My hours are 8:00AM-8:00PM Monday through Friday, and 9AM-3PM on Saturday. I tutor students from around the country via the online platform provided. Please allow 24 hours for cancellations.

I have had the pleasure of helping hundreds of students achieve academic success in my career as an educator. Let me support you, or your student, in achieving lasting academic success through enhanced literacy!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Reading

As a Special Education teacher with Pasadena Unified Schools I created an individualized reading program that I documented in my graduate portfolio. My Reading Specialist Certification was obtained through California State University at Los Angeles. I taught reading and English as a licensed teacher in California for Los Angeles Unified Schools. I was also a Literacy Coach for LAUSD. In this position, I was a teacher coach, testing coordinator, and editor of the "Writing Across the Curriculum" resource for teachers and students. As English department chair, I taught reading and English with Richmond Public Schools in Virginia. I was chosen to conduct several professional development sessions for teachers on reading and writing strategies that facilitate learning in all subjects.
