About Gordon

I am currently enrolled in the Regent University School of Divinity pursuant of a Master's of Divinity. I have taken a number of courses in Biblical Theology, Hermeneutics, and Ancient Greek and Hebrew. And my B.S. Organizational Leadership and Management empowered me with the knowledge of leadership theories and management principles necessary for any business to thrive in a competitive marketplace.

I am in graduate school right now, so first and foremost I am learner who happens to spend a lot of my time researching, writing, and communicating ideas. I believe this skill set is valuable for being able to teach, because over the years I have had to teach myself a number of things.

For instance, when I joined the Navy in 2004 to be a submariner, I soon found myself having to learn a number of complicated systems that required some technical, mechanical, and electrical knowledge that I didn't learn in high school. In doing that, I found out that even the most difficult subject and topic can be broken down and simplified into basic parts for easier mental digestion. I take the same approach when it comes to learning and teaching.

One big reason why I signed up to tutor with WyzAnt is because I enjoy empowering people with knowledge and seeing them succeed. I believe everybody is "going somewhere" in life, and sometimes we all need a little push or a helping hand to get to the next level. Coaching, mentoring, and tutoring is the most natural way to learn in my opinion, because having an exclusive relationship allows one to really focus on the difficulties, and keep their eyes on the hurdles they need to jump in order to "finish the race" so to speak.

As part of my graduate coursework, I have come across a wide range of literature that has - shall we say - "big words." As a natural part of learning these words, my own personal vocabulary is quite large (I have taken a number of online tests and all of them indicate my vocabulary size to be >29,000).

I have a home studio with Pro Tools, and have spent the last few years recording my own projects and the songs of bands I've been. When I first started out, the learning curve was huge, and there were so many mistakes I made that could have easily been corrected had I gotten some formal training. So... having learned "the hard way" how to produce music, I feel pretty confident in teaching others the techniques and tools they need.

I have been playing chess ever since I was a little kid, and have always been fascinated with the game both on a strategic and tactical level but also a philosophical one! The last time I took on an adult chess student, they went from not knowing anything to giving me a challenge! I'm not the best player out there by any means, but I know how to break down the game into simple concepts so that they could easily walk into an open tournament and play with confidence.

In terms of cooking - I simply love food and love to cook. My wife gets home later than I do, and so it's been on me to meal plan and do food prep, so I've simply owned up to my domestication and consider myself a solid home cook. I watch a lot of food shows and have learned a lot of technique and culinary theory just from modeling what the pro chefs do.

If you feel "stuck" or "lost" or just don't know where to begin when it comes to certain topics - please reach out! I love helping people out, and I would love to help you out if something is giving you a challenge.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I am currently enrolled in the Regent University School of Divinity pursuant of a Master's of Divinity. I have taken a number of courses in Biblical Theology, Hermeneutics, and Ancient Greek and Hebrew.

Career Development

My B.S. Organizational Leadership and Management empowered me with the knowledge of leadership theories and management principles necessary for any business to thrive in a competitive marketplace. Developing one's career often requires a degree of introspection and planning in order to achieve results, and my education has provided me with a number of tools and techniques to accomplish those tasks. In short, personal development and career development go hand in hand.

Chess

I am a lifelong player and chess enthusiast. While I was in the Navy, I tutored a bunch of my shipmates on the nuances of the game while out on deployment, and so I am used to working with players of all skill levels.

Cooking

I have learned the art of cooking purely through the joy and experience of cooking food at home for myself, my wife, and our guests. I have watched way too much cooking TV shows or culinary YouTube channels, and so I've simply picked up a lot of technique via the school of life.

Music Production

I am the proprietary audio engineer of Philosonic Studios located in Norfolk, VA. Through Philosonic Studios, I have recorded several artists and have taken on a few private clients for mentoring and training. I have been professionally recording audio and music for the last 3 years, although as independent recording artist I have been involved with amateur music production since high school. I have also volunteered a number of times to run the audio mixing console at my church, which is a hybrid analog-digital system.
