Hello, I am a parent teacher and consider myself a counselor for youth. I have been teaching for 8 years and my experience is with students who have challenging behaviors, struggle with ADD, or ADHD and who have IEPs. I have also taught regular education. My subjects include English 6-12. I believe reading strategies and test taking skills can assist students in meeting their goals for SOL's and improve their overall goals in every academic class they encounter. After all every subject requires reading comprehension. I feel it is the base that is needed for learning in each subject.
Teaching grades 6-12 I have worked in Special Education as well as regular education for the past 8 years. To begin, I feel it is important to complete assessments to find out what the student already understands, and use the most updated state curriculum and standards of learning (SOL) to determine where we need to start and what we need to accomplish. It is also important that the student and parent have a goal in mind for their tutoring and know what area the student needs the most help in. This can be done by conferencing with their teachers.
I am available between 3:30-5:30 (willing to negotiate based on parental needs) during the school months and offer a more flexible schedule during the summer months upon request. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As an educator, public speaking is a daily task. It is also a curriculum standard required on the SOLs. As a certified English teacher, I teach public speaking each year. I walk students through every aspect from eye contact, appropriate subject matter for their audience, to appropriate tone and volume. Effective communication is a must in today's society.
