About Christopher

Hello!

I'm an experienced teacher, and I'd be happy to help tutor you or your child. I've taught students in every grade K-12 here in Virginia, and served as an Adjunct Lecturer of History at the New York City College of Technology (NYCCT-CUNY) in downtown Brooklyn, NY. I have earned a BA in History (Liberal Arts) and Philosophy (Ethics and Public Policy) from the University of Northern Colorado, a MAT in History & Social Science Education from Christopher Newport University, and a MA in Modern World History from St. John's University. I also hold a Postgraduate Professional License in Virginia with endorsements in English, History & Social Sciences, and Middle School Science (grades 6-8), as well as an Initial Teacher License in Colorado with endorsements in English Language Arts (grades 7-12) and Social Studies Education (grades 7-12).

I began my teaching career as a special educator, and have taught English, Math, Science, and Social Studies in several different school districts here in Virginia. I like to meet my students in a public place such as a library branch when possible, although I will consider travel to private homes. Once I meet the student and get a sense of their needs, I make a plan to address deficits and build upon existing strengths. I teach general skills such as note taking and organization, help the student prepare for upcoming projects and assessments, remediate gaps in learning, and teach new information.

I hope that you will contact me regarding your tutoring needs.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
