About Olivia

Hello,

My name is Olivia and I have been a high school and middle school teacher for four years. I have a PA State Teacher Certification in Biology (7-12th grade) and Secondary Science 7-12th grade. I also have a Maryland Teacher Certification in Biology 7-12th grade. I have four years experience teaching middle school science and have taught high school general and honors Biology, middle school Life Science, high school Physical Science, middle school Earth Science, Algebra I, and elementary through high school physical education classes. For the past three years, I had been teaching middle school science for 6th and 7th grade.

My strengths as a teacher include creating engaging and exciting lessons along with using researched based methods of making the content more memorable and to help students tackle the challenging aspects of a subject. I am able to build good rapport with each student and infuse humor into lessons which increases their motivation to succeed. With my experience in Common Core Curriculum and additional coursework, I am able and well equipped to tutor students in not only science, but also in Math, English, Reading, Writing, and Study Skills.

I graduated from Grove City College with a BS in Biology. I have worked as a tutor/counselor for underprivileged youth in a summer enrichment program and with at- risk youth as an instructor. I have also tutored high school students in Biology. My experience motivating students and making learning enjoyable could help your struggling student.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

For the past three years, I have worked with students with ADD/ADHD. I used strategies that I learned through my education certification in PA and MD to help these students be successful academically and socially. In my training for education certification with my undergraduate degree, I took the class "Exceptionalities in Secondary Education" that provided strategies to help students with ADD/ADHD be successful.

Algebra 1

I taught Algebra for middle and high school students. I was a teacher in a public school in which I designed lessons based on common core curriculum in which math concepts were integrated into the lessons.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

For the past three years, I have worked with students with autism. I used strategies that I learned through my education certification in PA and MD to help these students be successful academically and socially. In my training for education certification with my undergraduate degree, I took the class "Exceptionalities in Secondary Education" that provided strategies to help students with autism be successful. As a teacher, I developed a strong rapport with students with autism due to my strategies to help them be successful, that a parent of a student with autism requested that her child was assigned to my classes each year since I taught multiple grades. The parents of students with autism were very pleased with the academic improvement their children made in my classroom.

Biology

I'm certified to teach 7th-12th grade Biology, and I have four years of teaching experience in both middle school and high school.

Botany

I have taken Plant Taxonomy in college. I have experience in Wildlife and Conservation and Plant Taxonomy labs identifying plants and trees.

Elementary Science

I taught 6th grade earth science, astronomy, physical science, and ecology/environmental science as a public and private middle school teacher. I taught ecology and environmental science as a nature instructor to students age five through twelve.

Public Speaking

I worked as a tutor/counselor at the Frostburg State University Regional Math Science Center, in which I helped to prepare high school students to present scientific research to a panel of scientists. Topics to help the students speak effectively included eye contact, volume, posture, and mannerisms.

Study Skills

I worked as a public middle school teacher for three years, a private school middle and high school teacher for one year, and a tutor/counselor for high school students. In all of those roles, I tutored students in effective methods to organize their work, using chunking and graphic organizers to organize overwhelming information and to organize their thoughts. Also, I helped students with time management and self regulation of their work pace. As a public teacher, I tutored students for many hours after school on organizing their papers, and effective note taking strategies.

Zoology

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. My college courses included Conservation and Wildlife Biology, Biology 102, in which I studied wildlife population changes, identified species, and each species habitat requirements.
