I've always loved math. I am a former college algebra instructor. Before graduating magna cum laude from Christopher Newport University, I tutored pre-calculus and calculus in their math lab. I often came early and left late, without extra pay, to ensure all students got the help they needed. The other tutors were Education majors and told me students would forgo their help and wait for my shift. The Math Dept. secretary said students often told the Dean to give me a raise and hire me...

I often came early and left late, without extra pay, to ensure all students got the help they needed. The other tutors were Education majors and told me students would forgo their help and wait for my shift. The Math Dept. secretary said students often told the Dean to give me a raise and hire me full-time. However, it was never about the money. For 20+ years, I tutored math for free in my spare time.
Students describe me as friendly and patient. I know math is hard for many students, and I'm never judgmental when students struggle with even basic arithmetic. I encourage them to ask questions until they fully understand the material. I practice the Socratic method of tutoring. I don't give students the answers; I constantly ask them questions to gauge their understanding and elicit the correct answers from them. When they're wrong, I ask students why they're incorrect. This makes them independent thinkers and boosts their confidence.
I tutor pre-algebra, algebra I and II, trigonometry, and more. However, preparing for timed tests requires a different skill set. I teach students to use mental math, logic, and common sense to improve their time management, which leads to higher scores. For fun, I read the dictionary and do crossword puzzles. This has expanded my vocabulary and enabled me to help students increase their verbal scores on tests like the ASVAB and AFOQT. If you need test prep assistance, I can supply all of the materials for the ACT, SAT, ASVAB, AFOQT, TEAS, HESI, Accuplacer, and more.
Michael has provided examples of their subject expertise by answering 1292 questions submitted by students on Wyzant’s Ask an Expert.
Mr. Michael, Hands down is one of the best tutors I’ve ever had. He takes time to break down the lesson so that you understand. If you get an answer wrong he doesn’t make feel bad, instead he explains to where you can understand why your answer was incorrect. Over the last few weeks, I feel more confident in preparing to take my ASVAB, and join the military. I would highly recommend him as a tutor.Tayeshawn, 14 lessons with MichaelTutor responded:
Thank you, Dequan, for the compliment. Part of succeeding on a test, or in life in general, is having confidence. Never doubt yourself, and don't let anyone else's doubts stop you from reaching for your goals. There is nothing you cannot do if you set your mind to it.
This is my first time utilizing a tutor and I wish I did for previous classes in my life. Michael is very good at explaining and has the work for you pre planned out so you don’t feel like your time is being wasted. I will continue working with him for some time and hopefully future sessions could be as helpful as this one.Michael, 4 lessons with MichaelTutor responded:
Thank you, Michael. I believe in preparedness for every lesson that I conduct. It is the professional thing to do, and I have chosen this as my profession because I love to help students learn. Time is money, and I do not believe in wasting either one of them, especially when it is someone else's. It would be nice if everyone believed this. I also believe in explaining things as simply as possible. I do not feel the need to provide elaborate explanations when many topics can be summarized in a few words.

Great tutor for AFOQT
I have now had a few lessons with Michael specifically focusing on the math portions of AFOQT. I am already feeling more confident on several of the concepts. Looking forward to more lessons.Tyler, 6 lessons with MichaelTutor responded:
Thanks for the positive review, Tyler. It is a pleasure to work with a student who pays complete attention, asks thought-provoking questions, and quickly assimilates the material that we discuss each time that we meet. I, too, look forward to continuing our sessions.
Michale was a great teacher, very patient. He always made sure I understood the material before ending our class or before moving on to the next subject. I hired Michale to help me prepared for my teas. He helped me to accomplish a higher school than expected in the math category. I was very pleased with his teaching techniques and i would definitely hired him again when/if needed for math.Elizabeth, 10 lessons with MichaelTutor responded:
Thank you for the kind words, Elizabeth. I will be happy to assist you again in the future when needed.
My first lesson with Michael was great! He really took the time to cover each section and question and did not hesitate to go further into detail if I was confused. He would show me many different approaches to solving a question. I look forward to scheduling another lesson with Michael to help me prepare for the AFOQT and better my math skills.Jarred, 5 lessons with MichaelTutor responded:
I appreciate the opportunity to work with you, Jarred. The strategy for doing well on the AFOQT math sections is different than what you would employ with a typical math test. Time is of the essence, and that is why I demonstrate various methods that can be used to answer problems quickly. I also know that not everyone sees a problem the same way, so by illustrating different approaches, I can hopefully share a method that is consistent with your mindset.
Made math easy to understand!
Michael helped me with the mathematical knowledge section of the ASVAB test. He helped me with the skills needed to solve the problems. Michael was very patient and knowledgeable. He took things that were always hard for me and made them easy. Will definitely use him again and recommend him to anyone who needs a math tutor!Trisha, 4 lessons with MichaelTutor responded:
Thank you, Niko. It has been apparent since our first lesson that you have excellent math skills. Trust your instincts and have confidence in your abilities. This will serve you well on the ASVAB and in life overall. I see no significant gaps in your mathematical knowledge, and I am confident that you will excel in this area.
I couldn’t have asked for a better tutor.
Michael A. Is amazing! He is so patient and understanding when you don’t understand even the small things. Math has never been my strong point but with his help he has helped me prepare for the Accuplacer so much! Please! If you are looking for a tutor GO TO HIM! You won’t be disappointed. Thank you so much Michael and I will definitely be scheduling some tutor sessions in college.Aliyah, 1 lesson with MichaelTutor responded:
You're welcome, Aliyah. Thank you for the kind words. I wish that we would have had more time prior to your Accuplacer exam, but trying to go through all three sections of the Next Generation Accuplacer in only two hours was unfortunately not feasible. That is why I sent you the additional notes about the Advanced Algebra and Quantitative Reasoning sections after our lesson ended. I wanted to make certain that, one way or the other, we did address everything that was on the Accuplacer exam. I do hope that this material helped you. I am more than willing to assist you in the future with your college math courses. Best of luck on the Accuplacer!
All my tutor lesson with Michael were outstanding! He takes his time to explain problems. He is just an outstanding tutor! If you need help and in search for tutor give him a try. You won’t be disappointed.Chris, 7 lessons with MichaelTutor responded:
I absolutely love working with all of my students. Sometimes though, I encounter a student that has a special quality. You can say the "it" factor. Chris is one of those students. His drive and determination are evident upon first meeting him. There is no question in my mind that this student's ceiling is extremely high. I am confident that he is poised for great success in the future, and our country is in good hands as long as we have individuals like Chris as active duty service members.
My session with Michael was great today, I learned a lot, I’m not good at word problems and conversions, with him he’s showing me how to simplify it, breaking it down for me to make it easier to learn and how to remember things. I’m learning and I’m looking forward to the next session.Loranda, 6 lessons with MichaelTutor responded:
I really appreciate the positive review, Loranda. I really love working with adult learners and helping remind them that it is not that they do not know how to do certain types of math problems, but they have just forgotten. I help them along the way by boosting their confidence and reassuring their belief in themselves. I know that you are fully capable of earning the score that you need on the TEAS exam; you simply need some refreshers on a few items. We will get there!
