I graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. in Mathematics from Christopher Newport University. I earned departmental honors for the highest GPA in the Math department. For several semesters as an undergraduate and after graduation, I worked one-on-one as a tutor with pre-calculus and calculus students in the CNU math lab. I moved on to an 18 year career as a data analyst. In my spare time, I tutored math students ranging from elementary school to college-age. I also worked as a college algebra instructor before becoming a full-time math tutor.

I have had the opportunity to work with a diverse student population. I am flexible enough to adjust my approach to each student's individual needs. Some students only need a brief refresher or some positive feedback to boost their confidence. Others may require more patience and understanding, especially those who have been away from the classroom for several years. I have worked with all types of students, and they have all experienced positive results. A typical lesson will include an overview of the general topics coupled with practice problems that we can work on together until you are comfortable enough to work the problems without any assistance.

Math has always been my best and favorite subject. As an incoming freshman at CNU, I tested out of math, but I still took several math classes before choosing math as my major. I help students overcome their fear or dislike of numbers by using humor and demonstrating how math relates to everyday applications. Even though I have never served in the military or been a nurse, I am very knowledgeable about the ASVAB, AFOQT, and TEAS exams. Besides the math sections, I can also assist you with the verbal portions, too. I have a history of producing results. Since January 2017, I have helped over 130 students on Wyzant's platform, accumulated approximately 1000 hours of tutoring, earned over 500 five-star ratings, received over 50 student testimonials, and placed among the top 97% of tutors all-time on Wyzant's platform. Here are some examples of how I have helped students experience huge turnarounds in their performance:

AFOQT June 2019: helped a student with the word knowledge and verbal analogies sections of the test, and this student raised his previous score from a 5 to a 48.

ASVAB May 2019: helped a student improve his math scores to 66 on the arithmetic reasoning section and 71 on the math knowledge portion of the test.

AFOQT April 2019: assisted a student with tripling his prior math score and raising his pilot score to a 91.

AFOQT March 2019: helped a student raise his quantitative score by 23 points from a 4 to a 27, which far exceeds the minimum score of 10 that he needed.

ASVAB March 2019: assisted a student with improving his ASVAB score by 37 points from a 22 to a 59. His GT score improved to a 107, and he was able to get the MOS that he wanted.

OAR March 2019: helped a student with the math portion of the test, and he raised his previous score by 10 points to a 50.

TEAS VI January 2019: assisted a nursing student who had previously failed the test, and she improved her math score by 10 points, her reading score by 17 points, and passed the test.

AFOQT December 2018: helped student to pass the AFOQT and become an officer in the U.S. Air Force. We reviewed the math knowledge, arithmetic reasoning, and verbal analogies sections of the test. The student was referred by his cousin, who I also helped to pass and become an officer in the USAF two months earlier.

ASVAB December 2018: assisted student with the math knowledge, arithmetic reasoning, and word knowledge portions of the test, and she passed by improving her previous AFQT score by 19 points. We utilized material from the Kaplan 2017-18 and ASVAB for Dummies study guides, along with other sources.

AFOQT October 2018: assisted student with the math knowledge and arithmetic reasoning sections, and she increased her previous score by 13 points and passed the test.

SAT Math September 2018: helped a high school student improve his previous SAT Math score by 70 points to a 740. We utilized The Princeton Review Cracking the SAT Premium 2018 Edition and several official College Board practice tests.

TEAS VI Math July 2018: helped student earn a 94 on the math section using problems from the ATI TEAS Secrets Study Guide by Mometrix. This student is originally from Poland, so English is her second language, and she had to relearn mathematics based on the American curriculum.

ASVAB July 2018: tutored recent high school graduate in the math and verbal portions of the test, and he raised his previous AFQT score from a 32 to a 55. We utilized the Kaplan 2017-2018 Strategies, Practice, and Review study guide.

AFOQT April 2018: aided student with passing the Air Force AFOQT test and the pilot and navigation parts by helping him to raise his math score by 4 points, his navigation score by 26 points, the verbal score by 30 points, the pilot score by 3 points, and his academic score by 17 points.

ASVAB April 2018: assisted student with the math knowledge and arithmetic reasoning sections, and he raised his previous score by 20 points

ASVAB January 2018: aided college student at HU with studying for the math knowledge, arithmetic reasoning, and word knowledge sections of the test. He raised his previous AFQT score by 17 points from a 55 to a 72 and his GT score to a 109. This allowed him to start his commission.

ASVAB October 2017: assisted college student at ODU with the math knowledge, arithmetic reasoning, word knowledge and paragraph comprehension portions of the test, and he raised his previous AFQT score by 19 points. We studied from the Kaplan 2017-2018 Strategies, Practice, and Review and ASVAB for Dummies study guides.

Stellar tutor!!

I have recently had trouble with the Arithmetic reasoning and math portions of the ASVAB test. I was originally nervous and skeptical about getting a tutor, However, when I found Michael he has been such a great help and has made me absolutely prosper with the subjects I struggled with. He has a very nice and wonderful personality and shows his serious side when it comes to you succeeding. I would highly recommend Michael as a tutor to anyone any day.

Clayton, 8 lessons with Michael
Tutor responded:

Thank you, Clayton, for the kind remarks. It is a pleasure to assist you with preparing for the ASVAB math sections, and I look forward to continuing to work with you!

Great teacher!

Michael has helped me prep for the AFOQT since February and he has been stellar. He is very helpful and encourages you to think the problem through before jumping to the answer. Thank you for all your help!

Sabrina, 10 lessons with Michael
Tutor responded:

It has been my pleasure to work with you, Sabrina. I truly believe that the time and effort that you have put forth will yield positive results. I wish you great success on the test and in your future endeavors!

Extremely Professional and patient

I definitely look forward to working with Michael again! he gave me a few easy tricks that I can use to make life easier.

Joey, 1 lesson with Michael
Tutor responded:

Thank you, Joey. I also look forward to continuing our sessions. We have only scratched the surface of the strategies that can be employed to help you maximize your score on the AFOQT. From our initial encounter, I know that you are committed to putting in the hard work necessary to succeed.

Fantastic session with Michael!

Michael is a very patient tutor who answered every question I had and took time to thoroughly explain all the concepts we worked on for the AFOQT arithmetic section. We worked through a handful of problems to apply the concepts we talked through. It was a highly productive session and I can't wait for the next one!

Olivia, 1 lesson with Michael
Tutor responded:

Thank you, Olivia, for the favorable review. It is very refreshing to see a student who wants to absorb as much knowledge as possible, and this is the impression that I have gained of you from our initial encounter. I look forward to continuing to meet with you and helping you to achieve your desired goals on the AFOQT.

Just phenomenal

I did my first lesson with Michael and what I learned in an hour about strategies on how to take this test is way more than what I could have expected. I 10/10 would trust Michael to get you where you need to be.

Ronnie, 3 lessons with Michael
Tutor responded:

Thank you for the testimonial, Ronnie. I look forward to continuing our tutoring sessions. I am extremely confident that you will achieve great success on the test.

Excellent Tutor

Michael was a perfect tutor for my daughter. She struggled with Math and Michael was extremely patient with her. He is an expert in Math, but also human kindness. He gave her more confidence and basic understandings to do well on the SATs. I highly recommend Michael he clearly loves what he is doing!

Laura , 4 lessons with Michael
Tutor responded:

Thank you very much, Laura. I thoroughly enjoyed working with Margot. I wish her nothing but success, and I will be happy to assist her in the future, if needed.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Michael took the time to walk through every question with me and knew how to answer every single one of my questions without any problems. He didn’t waste any time on any irrelevant information but walked through every question thoroughly enough for me to understand what he was talking about.

Rachael, 1 lesson with Michael
Tutor responded:

I appreciate the positive feedback, Rachael. When a student asks questions throughout the session, it demonstrates that he/she is fully engaged. I do not believe in wasting time by giving elaborate, drawn-out monologues about a topic or by trying to demonstrate how smart I am using flowery language. My goal is to explain the material in a clear, concise fashion that is easy for the student to understand. That is what worked for me as a student, and I do the same for my students.

Very knowledgeable and easy to work with

I needed some refresher for the math sections of my asvab, so Michael have been tutoring me and he’s been pretty amazing so far. He is very easy to work with and he’s very knowledgeable plus he’s always come prepared.

DELROY, 6 lessons with Michael
Tutor responded:

Thank you, Delroy, for the favorable review. As a tutor, I believe that I have an obligation to come fully prepared to each tutoring session. For individuals taking standardized tests such as the ASVAB, that means coming to each session with official practice tests for the students to use. For those individuals who have do have their own materials, it means requesting that they send me the information at least 24 hours prior to the lesson so that I can look over it and be adequately equipped to answer any questions that the student may have. Anything less than that is unfair to the student and unacceptable, in my opinion. Good luck to you in your military career now that you have successfully passed the ASVAB!

Breaking It Down For Me

I look forward to continuing working with Michael. Very proficient math mathematician and it able to teach it in a way that breaks the problems down in several possible ways.

John, 9 lessons with Michael
Tutor responded:

Thank you for the favorable review, John. I believe that it is important to demonstrate that it is possible to solve a math problem in a variety of ways because no two people will necessarily see the problem in the same fashion. The beauty of mathematics is that even though there are many roads, they all lead to the same destination, as long as you follow the directions correctly. Of course, on a test like the AFOQT, time is of the essence, and it is also important to know how to quickly perform calculations and how to eliminate answers from the multiple-choice list that are illogical. From our interaction, I can already discern that you have an excellent background in math, and you should have no difficulty excelling on the math portion of the AFOQT.
