I graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. in Mathematics from Christopher Newport University. I earned departmental honors for having the highest GPA in the Math department. As an undergraduate, I was a math tutor for several semesters in the CNU math lab. I worked one-on-one with students in pre-calculus and calculus. I continued to tutor in the lab for one semester after graduation before moving on to an 18 year career as a data analyst. In my spare time, I tutored math students ranging from elementary school to college-age. I also worked as a college algebra instructor before becoming a full-time math tutor.

I have had the opportunity to work with a diverse student population. I am flexible enough to adjust my approach to each student's individual needs. Some students only need a brief refresher or some positive feedback to boost their confidence. Others may require more patience and understanding, especially those who have been away from the classroom for several years. I have worked with all types of students, and they have all experienced positive results. A typical lesson will include an overview of the general topics coupled with practice problems that we can work on together until you are comfortable enough to work the problems without any assistance.

Math has always been my best and favorite subject. As an incoming freshman at CNU, I tested out of math, but I still took several math classes before choosing math as my major. I help students overcome their fear or dislike of numbers by using humor and demonstrating how math relates to everyday applications. Even though I have never served in the military or been a nurse, I am very knowledgeable about the ASVAB, AFOQT, and TEAS exams. Besides the math sections, I can also assist you with the verbal portions, too. I have a history of producing results. Since January 2017, I have helped over 130 students on Wyzant's platform, accumulated more than 800 hours of tutoring, earned over 400 five-star ratings, received over 40 student testimonials, and placed among the top 97% of tutors all-time on Wyzant's platform. Here are some examples of how I have helped students experience huge turnarounds in their performance:

AFOQT March 2019: helped a student raise his quantitative score by 23 points from a 4 to a 27, which far exceeds the minimum score of 10 that he needed.

ASVAB March 2019: assisted a student with improving his ASVAB score by 37 points from a 22 to a 59. His GT score improved to a 107, and he was able to get the MOS that he wanted.

OAR March 2019: helped a student with the math portion of the test, and he raised his previous score by 10 points to a 50.

TEAS VI January 2019: assisted a nursing student who had previously failed the test, and she improved her math score by 10 points, her reading score by 17 points, and passed the test.

AFOQT December 2018: helped student to pass the AFOQT and become an officer in the U.S. Air Force. We reviewed the math knowledge, arithmetic reasoning, and verbal analogies sections of the test. The student was referred by his cousin, who I also helped to pass and become an officer in the USAF two months earlier.

ASVAB December 2018: assisted student with the math knowledge, arithmetic reasoning, and word knowledge portions of the test, and she passed by improving her previous AFQT score by 19 points. We utilized material from the Kaplan 2017-18 and ASVAB for Dummies study guides, along with other sources.

AFOQT October 2018: assisted student with the math knowledge and arithmetic reasoning sections, and she increased her previous score by 13 points and passed the test.

SAT Math September 2018: helped a high school student improve his previous SAT Math score by 70 points to a 740. We utilized The Princeton Review Cracking the SAT Premium 2018 Edition and several official College Board practice tests.

TEAS VI Math July 2018: helped student earn a 94 on the math section using problems from the ATI TEAS Secrets Study Guide by Mometrix. This student is originally from Poland, so English is her second language, and she had to relearn mathematics based on the American curriculum.

ASVAB July 2018: tutored recent high school graduate in the math and verbal portions of the test, and he raised his previous AFQT score from a 32 to a 55. We utilized the Kaplan 2017-2018 Strategies, Practice, and Review study guide.

AFOQT April 2018: aided student with passing the Air Force AFOQT test and the pilot and navigation parts by helping him to raise his math score by 4 points, his navigation score by 26 points, the verbal score by 30 points, the pilot score by 3 points, and his academic score by 17 points.

ASVAB April 2018: assisted student with the math knowledge and arithmetic reasoning sections, and he raised his previous score by 20 points

ASVAB January 2018: aided college student at HU with studying for the math knowledge, arithmetic reasoning, and word knowledge sections of the test. He raised his previous AFQT score by 17 points from a 55 to a 72 and his GT score to a 109. This allowed him to start his commission.

ASVAB October 2017: assisted college student at ODU with the math knowledge, arithmetic reasoning, word knowledge and paragraph comprehension portions of the test, and he raised his previous AFQT score by 19 points. We studied from the Kaplan 2017-2018 Strategies, Practice, and Review and ASVAB for Dummies study guides.

TEAS VI May 2017: aided student with the math and English sections, and she improved her previous score by 7 points to earn a passing mark on the test

Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I have been working with elementary school students since I was in middle school and a member of the National Junior Honor Society. I apply a patient approach as I explain math in a simple yet effective manner. This is very important during these formative years in a student's education. Without a solid foundation in elementary math, students will be behind the curve once they are faced with more advanced math. I also illustrate how math is relevant to everyday life.

Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Out of all of the subjects that I tutor, algebra 1 is my favorite. It is the foundation for all of your subsequent math courses. I have taught algebra to high school students, as well as to college students in developmental math and college algebra. I have also helped many students with understanding the algebra problems that appear on the Accuplacer, ACT, ASVAB, AFOQT, SAT, and TEAS exams.

I have tutored high school and college students taking calculus I, AP calculus, and business calculus. While working as a homework grader for an advanced calculus professor, I found several mistakes in his solution sets. He was appreciative of my attention to detail. I will be just as painstaking in my approach with helping you.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

Pre-algebra is the bridge between K-5 math and Algebra I and II. I have taught numerous middle school students how to apply the skills learned in elementary math to the word problems they encounter in pre-algebra. This has made them better prepared for not only algebra, but also more advanced math courses.

Knowledgeable, Kind and patient Educator!

Michael is very approachable, easy to follow, prompt and polite. He has a gift for teaching, which is a virtue that is difficult to come across. I was able to understand and grasp the material fully when it came to our lesson. I picked up a lot more in my session with Michael than I would alone. If you are in search of a great tutor and conversationalist to boot, look no further. Michael is compassionate in what he does.

Amy, 1 lesson with Michael
Tutor responded:

Thank you, Amy. Even though we had only one session together, I know that you will do exceedingly well on the ASVAB. I have never had a student make a stronger first impression than you did. It was extremely pleasant working and conversing with you. I wish you nothing but success in your future endeavors!

AFOQT math/word knowledge tutoring was incredibly helpful

I am about 6 years out of high school, so I was very rusty on my math skills. I never took a single math class in college. I tried teaching myself, but quickly realized I was going to need help. I saw from Michael's reviews that he had experience with AFOQT students in the past. Michael had math questions ready for me during our first tutoring session and always asked if there was anything else specific that I would like to discuss. I had about one lesson per week over the last two months and I am very happy with the outcome. I believe I am much more proficient with math skills and I am going into the AFOQT with far more confidence than I had before. I would highly recommend Michael for the AFOQT math, or any other math of that type. In our last lesson he gave me a few very good pointers for the word knowledge section as well which I think will be very beneficial for the test.

Austin, 11 lessons with Michael
Tutor responded:

One of the best parts of being a math tutor is getting the opportunity to work with so many wonderful people. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Austin over these past couple of months. He was always very receptive, inquisitive, and motivated to succeed. Despite being six years removed from high school, his level of math knowledge was still very sound. Like many others, he simply needed a refresher on certain areas. Based on what I have observed, I believe that this student is poised for success on the AFOQT and beyond.

Michael breaks down Math in an easy way for me to understand and remember.

Michael has been the best Math tutor for me. He explains things in an easy manner and a in a way that I understand fairly quickly. He is very understanding, patient, encouraging and non judgmental. Math has always been a challenge and now that I'm a re-entry student going back to school after 20 years I am needing a major review of basic math and algebra. Michael is a God send.

Tara, 17 lessons with Michael
Tutor responded:

I appreciate your positive feedback, Tara. It is always my goal to make things easy to understand. My experience as a community college algebra instructor has provided me with ample opportunities to assist adult learners returning to school after several years away from the classroom. I demonstrate the same patience with them as I would hope that someone would exhibit with me. Keep up the hard work, and I am confident that you will succeed.

Great

Michael has a way with words. Easy to comprehend and understand. Extremely patient, moves at just the right pace, very professional.

Shanell, 5 lessons with Michael
Tutor responded:

I really appreciate the kind words, Shanell. You obviously had an excellent knowledge of mathematics. Like many students, you are simply in need of a refresher on certain topics. I know that our test prep sessions, coupled with your skill level, will translate into an excellent score on the ASVAB GT section.

Best Math Teacher

Michael is the best math teacher I’ve ever have! He is just exceptional! I’m 28 and take math lessons to get ready for accuplacer math test. I’m not good at math at all, I’ve never been! It always seemed too boring and difficult. However Michael helps me a lot, he always can find a way to explain something difficult in a very easy way.

Nadia, 12 lessons with Michael
Tutor responded:

Thank you, Nadia, for the positive feedback. During our lessons, you have demonstrated an extraordinary work ethic and drive to succeed. There is no doubt that your hard work will result in success on the Accuplacer and beyond.

Gave me hope when No one thought I was smart nough .

Michael really gave me the light I was looking for. All my life I have struggled with math but I have always been able to get by, but when I decided I wanted to join the military I had to take a test called the asvab witch I had failed twice before having classes with michel. He made me look at math problems from a totaly different perspective teaching skills that are a game changer when it comes to standardized test’s like the asvab. He thought me time saving strategies that were a key to my success! I had lost all hope to be honest I thought I would never achieve this goal but he was kind paitient he listened and learned my weak points. I learned more with michel in one month than with 12 years of Mathematical experience in high school middle school and even elementary. He not only thought me Arithmetic reasoning and geometry But also with the challenging word comprehension part of the test. I went from having a 21 percentile score to achieving a 42FAQT score which is huge compared to where I was. Michael made my fear of working with percentages and fractions seam like nothing by the time I was done I had it down like muscle memory. I will always recommend this Outstanding tutor to anybody of any age. I achieved my goal because of him and for that I will be for ever grateful. Thank you

Lohandra, 46 lessons with Michael
Tutor responded:

I have never seen a student more focused or dedicated than Lohandra. Her work ethic and motivation were incomparable. I knew that this would translate into success for this student, and it did. Her enthusiasm also made each tutoring session extremely enjoyable. It was quite rewarding to watch this student's confidence and competence grow with each successive session. I know that Lohandra has only scratched the surface of her potential; the best is yet to come. Thank you for such positive feedback!

Great Tutor

I worked with Michael on math problems for my upcoming TEAS test. Michael is a great instructor and explained everything very thoroughly. I look forward to working with him again.

Alison, 2 lessons with Michael
Tutor responded:

Thank you, Alison. I look forward to continuing to work with you, too. I can clearly see that you are a quick learner, and you should have no difficulty with excelling on the TEAS exam. As it is with many students, you are probably only in need of a refresher on certain topics, as well as some insight into how to become an even better test-taker.

Kind and Knowledgeable

Michael assisted me with preparing for the AFOQT. While our primary focus was on the quantitative portion he also helped with the verbal. He is by far one of the best tutors I have ever encountered both as an adult and looking back to undergrad. Not only did help me achieve the scores I needed but he did the same for my cousin. Because of his dedication and patience both my cousin and I will become officers in the U.S. Air Force. I can’t thank him enough for how he was able to help me in such a short time. If you’re looking for a great tutor that DOES NOT talk down to you look no further. He is your guy.

Antonio, 3 lessons with Michael
Tutor responded:

Antonio, it was a pleasure working with both you and Kandace. I know from our interaction that both of you will be extremely successful in your future endeavors. You have the professionalism, discipline, and motivation to make fine officers in the Air Force. The nation can be proud that it has individuals like you serving to protect our freedom and way of life. Thank you!

Excellent

He teaches my daughter 5th grade math!! Great guy, awesome and amazing!! I would recommend him to anyone!! My daughter Loves the help he gives her as well, she said he's been more helpful than her teacher and has more patience.

Tenisha, 10 lessons with Michael
Tutor responded:

Thank you so much for the positive feedback. Jayla is a quick learner and a good student. She listens well and it is very easy working with her. She seems to enjoy learning, and that attitude will serve her well throughout her schooling and beyond. It is a pleasure to be her tutor for elementary mathematics.
