About Sharmane

I have a passion for education and my approach is to focus on success. I believe that even small successes should go noticed and deserve recognition. I believe that one of the biggest obstacles in education would be the overcrowding of schools and the inability to provide more individualized teaching. All children learn differently and I believe that it is my job to find out what works for each child. I have a very diverse background and I know I can aide a child in achieving success.

I currently possess my Bachelors from VCU in Criminal Justice and Homeland Security. I also have my Masters in Counseling from Hampton University. I currently work for Newport News Public Schools and at a local counseling agency. I lead a very active lifestyle and believe that you should take care of the mind, body and soul. Therefore, I having been participating in sports throughout my entire life and have been coaching for six years. I played the alto saxophone for five years and continue to play leisurely. I enjoy the athletics, social sciences, English/writing, and reading. I have been working with children for about seven years and I continue to do that on a daily basis. I have experience working with children of various backgrounds and abilities.I have experience working with children diagnosed with autism, ADHD and IEP's.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

I am focused on breaking down the subjects if the readings to ensure that it is easier to comprehend. I am aware of the standards of the ACT and have also taken the examination myself. I will assist with preparing lesson plans and explanations on why something is the correct answer.

ADD/ADHD

I have a degree in Counseling, therefore I have taken multiple classes on ADD/ADHD. I have worked with multiple clients with this diagnosis in the counseling field. I have taken a course that specifically describes how to interact with mental health clients. I have also worked with completing individualized treatment plans to aid in creating successful environments for children with ADD/ADHD. Children with ADD/ADHD require patience and more frequent breaks to optimize there learning potential.

Autism

I personally worked with a few clients with this diagnosis and I understand what it takes to work with an autistic child. I understand repetition and patience are most important with autistic children. Autistic children tend to behave with repetitive behavior and impaired interaction. In working with them you have to be completely alert and be prepared in case they have a tantrum. Autistic children need to be placed on a routine and I am able to aide parents in scheduling a weekly or daily routine for their child to adapt better.

Criminal Justice

I have taken multiple courses in criminal justice and maintained a B average in this subject area. I took courses ranging from criminal law, juvenile justice, and crime scene investigation. During my program I emphasized on criminal law. I have completed over 60 credits in criminal justice. I have a bachelors of science degree in criminal justice from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Fitness

I have designed personal fitness plans and specialized training for clients for 3 years. I have been lifting weights through involvement in athletics for 8 years and am fully aware of safety precautions and nutrition information in regards to fitness. I am a coach, motivator and a support system will working with individuals on obtaining their fitness goals.

Saxophone

I played the alto saxophone for five years in concert and marching band. I know how to read music and still own my saxophone. I know appropriate methods on teaching proper breathing and tongue placement while playing the saxophone. I am able to teach students how to read music and play various levels of music based on their ability.

Track & Field

I have coached track and field for about six years at various levels. I have coached on AAU teams with ages ranging from 4 to 18. I ran in middle school, high school and division one in college. I specialize in sprints through distance.I can also coach basics in hurdles and pole vault.
