About Jim

I have been teaching for 13 years. Most of my work has been with middle and high school English students (current teaching license expires in June 2017), but with homebound and GED work, I have taught all core subjects for Grades 6-12.

Currently, I work as an adult education/GED teacher with the Virginia Department of Corrections. I also teach an adult GED class two nights a week in Newport News. Previous to VADOC, I taught business, computer and English courses at a local career college. Also, I have completed coursework toward a doctorate in Educational Policy, Planning and Leadership at the College of William and Mary, and aim to be completed with the program soon.

My teaching style has been described as laid-back, but I look to use that to an advantage. Students can be drawn out more in a casual environment where ideas are encouraged and respected. Generally, I believe in collaboration, which of course is difficult in a one-on-one session. However, I feel that it's important to know where to find the answers. Life is not about memorization. In my view it is about developing certain skills. I look to apply class lessons in a way that they can be turned into life skills. For example, most students do not like reading comprehension activities. But, the reality is, many future tests, and in some cases, job applications are going to require the ability to read into material and perform well on a multiple-choice activity. Therefore, the skill of test-taking should be as important as the material being read.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
