About Kira

I graduated from Mary Washington in 2008 with a bachelor's degree in English. Then I spent a year in Japan teaching English in elementary and middle schools. I spend my summers teaching kids how to sew.

I very much enjoy tutoring and helping students to not just memorize information, but to fully grasp it. I believe there are the stages in a student's education: learning, doing, and teaching. Once a student knows a subject or process well enough to teach someone else about it, then they will remember it better.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Sewing

I have been sewing as a hobby for 20 years. I have been teaching children, ages 9 through 14, how to use a sewing machine for the past 2 summers.

I start with teaching about the machine itself, then about finding and using patterns. The students practice sewing on paper sheets, then I assist them in making a simple first project.
