I am someone who loves to learn but understands the needs of struggling learners myself. I am an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher, and as such have abundant knowledge of and experience in teaching all aspects of English, from grammar, vocabulary, reading, and writing, to spelling. Having also prepped students for the GED, I understand test taking strategies and important study skills. I have a deep love of History, having graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in the subject. For the past 6 years, I have been a home school Mom, teaching a child who is a very non-traditional learner, so I understand the need to approach subjects in a non-conventional manner if necessary. Finally, I have studied and spoken Spanish for several years, and have taught Spanish I to middle schoolers in a local home school co-op. I love to learn and can show your child strategies that will lead to successful learning.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have completed four semesters of graduate coursework in a master of education program, focusing on elementary education. I have home schooled my child through her elementary years of school. I served as a substitute for grades K-8 at a grammar school.
I have been an ESOL instructor for several years, teaching a multi-level class. Phonics is an essential part of the English language, and as such, I place a great deal of emphasis on phonics in my classes.
In my working career, I have utilized public speaking skills in a variety of ways. I have had several jobs that required effective public speaking skills, most notably, being employed as a park ranger with the National Park Service, which required me to present talks to large and diverse audiences. My current job as an ESOL teacher requires effective public speaking as well. I have also taught a Public Speaking course to middle school students.
Many of my ESOL students are also enrolled in GED classes. I spend a good deal of time on study skills and test taking strategies. I am also a home school parent with a child who has struggled in this area, so I have spent a good deal of time reviewing effective study skills.
