About Linda

I have over 30 years’ experience as a classroom teacher in grades 1 to college. Currently licensed in the state of Ohio, I hold a Master's degree in Education from Worcester State University and a B.A. in Honors English from the University of Massachusetts. For the last 20 years, I taught English at a highly academic private school in Cincinnati, Ohio.

I currently tutor all aspects of the grades 1-5 curricula, as well as literature, grammar, and SOL preparation for older students. I specialize in preparing students for the ACT, SAT, and school admission tests. Furthermore, I guide pupils as they write and edit paragraphs, essays, and research papers. With summer approaching, I also assist teens as they compose specialty camp application essays.

In addition to tutoring core skills, I minimize the stress of college applications by teaching useful test-taking strategies, much needed vocabulary, and effective tricks for excelling in the language portion of the ACT/SAT. My individualized approach to writing outstanding college entrance essays removes the terror from this dreaded experience while translating into improved writing skills.

I design unique strategies to meet each student’s needs and learning style. Guided practice follows my clear, straightforward explanations. I gradually reduce my assistance as my pupil becomes more comfortable with and ultimately masters the material. Meaningful homework assignments after each session provide additional practice. Formal and informal evaluations ensure that we are meeting our goals. I encourage feedback and make appropriate adjustments to maximize learning and critical thinking.

Regardless of the subject, my praise and gentle correction motivate my pupils to develop their full potential. I connect with my students and work to increase their self-confidence. Teaching is much more than my profession; it is my passion. I hope that I will have the opportunity to work with you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I am an English teacher with over 30 years experience who recently relocated to Richmond. For the past 15 years I have taught a class in test taking strategies for the verbal sections of the SAT/ACT. I also privately tutored individuals in these skills.
Not only do I give clear instructions, but I share many tips and shortcuts. We start by working together on the questions so that you will gain confidence. After you complete practice questions, we discuss your incorrect answers and I will guide you in finding the correct responses. Since we are working one-on-one, we are able to turn your specific weaknesses into strengths in order to significantly improve your Critical Reading and multiple choice question subject scores.
I am an expert in grammar which I teach in an easily understandable way. When you combine the most frequently tested usage rules with specific writing test strategies, you will dramatically improve your Writing and English scores.
I am a patient teacher who truly cares about my students. While our number 1 goal is to improve your test-taking skills, working with me will also increase your self-confidence as you approach this stress-filled experience.

ADD/ADHD

During my more than 30 years in the classroom, I have taught many mainstreamed students who have ADD/ADHD. During my 6 year tenure at a Regional High School, I had so many ADD/ADHD students in my 9th grade English class that I devised an individualized program which included reading skills, vocabulary/spelling, and writing. My approach was so successful that the Learning Disabilities Department scheduled all their freshmen and their teacher aide into my classes. Previously unmotivated students, finally able to succeed, actually helped each other when I was busy with others. They were constant visitors to my room, begging to sit in back to work on their weekly assignments during their study halls. When the 10th grade teacher encountered my first "graduates," she was astonished by their enthusiasm and skill levels.
I also worked as a tutor at the Saint Joseph Center where I taught students whose learning difficulties caused such serious behavioral problems that they were assigned to this alternative school program.
An academy, my most recent position, has a nationally acclaimed Exceptional Services Department. Again, because of my ability to work with their charges, students with ADD/ADHD were purposely scheduled into my classes. I also taught in the Summer Program, a 3 week introduction for incoming freshmen who need extra help adapting to high school. Most of the 75 students in this program are supported by our E.S. tutors during the school year. The E.S.faculty were very disappointed when I decided to semi-retire at the end of year's session.
I have participated in a variety of workshops and seminars dealing with learning issues and styles.

English

Over the past 30 years, I have taught English in a variety of settings including a private academic high school, a community college developmental department, a community college English department, a rural high school, and a program for behaviorally challenged teens. As you can see from my qualifications list, I excel at a variety of components of the English curriculum. Regardless of the educational situation, I always tutored individual students, not only to improve their performance, but also to increase their self-confidence. From grammar to literary analysis to writing skills, I have successfully taught and tutored students in my English classes.

Grammar

I have been teaching grammar in my high school and college English classes for over 30 years. I stressed the principles of usage as the basis for editing in order to discover mistakes. All of my students' essays involved self and peer editing.
Part of my Critical Thinking course included ACT/SAT preparation. Since grammar is the base for much of the writing sections, I divided basic usage into 6 different units. After I explained the principles involved, my students completed practice activities, including finding and correcting errors. Before we discussed the completed exercises,I reviewed the rules. After the students corrected their work, I answered questions. The students then demonstrated their proficiency on my teacher-made quizzes and on ACT/SAT practice exercises.

Proofreading

In my long career as an English educator, I always required my students to treat formal writing as a process. The final step is painstaking proofreading. As a tutor, I begin by pointing out grammatical errors and other weaknesses. Often the student can make the correction. Sometimes, however, I need to offer an explanation and/or assist with a solution. Gradually, as the student gains knowledge and confidence, he/she begins to proofread effectively and independently.

Reading

I took many Reading courses in college. On the practical side, I have over 30 years' teaching experience, including 1st grade through adults. I am currently tutoring 3 first graders in phonics and decoding skills. All of them are gaining self-confidence as their skills improve. We complete their homework and also do my worksheets, practice with word rods, and play games. Utilizing many techniques, I tailor my instruction to each student's specific needs. Offering lots of encouragement and awarding thousands of stickers help me connect with each of my youngsters.

SAT Reading

I am an English teacher who recently relocated to Richmond. For the past 15 years I have taught a class in test taking strategies for the verbal sections of the SAT/ACT. I also privately tutored individuals in these skills.
Not only do I give clear instructions, but I share many tips and shortcuts. We start by working together on the questions so that your daughter will gain confidence. After she completes practice questions, we discuss her incorrect answers and I will guide her in finding the correct responses. I am a expert in grammar, which I can teach as needed. I am also available to assist your daughter with her college entrance essays. I am a patient teacher who truly cares about her students. While our number 1 goal is to improve your daughter's test score, hopefully working with me will also increase her self-confidence.

Study Skills

Every year of my 30 years of teaching, I gave my students instructions for organizing their class materials. At first, we used a binder divided into the segments of the course, i.e. writing, literary terms, etc. After each student had her own tablet, we did this electronically in folders. My school used Blackboard, so I introduced my students to how I utilized the site. I also explained how to create a study schedule to my younger students, stressing the importance of keeping up with each night's assignment, constantly reviewing, and gradually working on long-range projects. I also taught them how to annotate a text and utilize the study questions at the end of each chapter.
In addition, I taught a 6-week after school seminar on study skills which covered material similar to that above.

Writing

I have been teaching writing for over 30 years. My students, who vary from grade 1 to adult, enjoy working with me to improve their skills. I divide the skills involved in composition into 3 distinct tasks. First I stress the importance of creating an outline which requires the writer to organize her thoughts logically. Then I encourage my student to follow her outline to create a first draft. Editing and proofreading are the final steps. I patiently guide my students, whether the goal is a book report, term paper, or college application entrance essay. Most recently I have helped 2 high school students compose successful specialty camp applications. I offer praise and gentle criticism to convince my young writers that they are being successful.
