I have enjoyed the privilege of working with children either as a teacher or coach since I was 16 (or as I like to think of it, a lot of hair ago).
During my 18 year tenure as a private and public school teacher I have created an impressive teaching tool kit. I pride myself on the ability to teach the core subjects in grade levels JK-8 completely and thoroughly to any child, on any level.
When I become your child's tutor, the first thing I do is administer a comprehensive skills test in order to find out exactly where your child is learning. Secondly, I structure an individual curriculum that targets your child's specific academic weakness while simultaneously helping your child to strengthen the academic skills that are already proficient. During each tutoring session, I use a combination of hands on manipulatives, specific academic computer programs, and old fashioned pencil and paper activities. At the end of each week, I generate a targeted evaluation for your child to complete. After the evaluation has been given, I then give your child specific feedback as to the skills that will next be targeted and we move forward.
Once every two weeks, I like to conference with the parents and the child in order to determine comfort levels and to listen to feedback regarding the tutoring process. I am a firm believer that the academic success of any child lies in the important three part relationship that exists between the child, the parent, and the instructor.
At the conclusion of our tutoring sessions, I provide a detailed written summary of each lesson's content, of your child's progress, and concrete ways how your child can continue their academic success.
I hold a Collegiate Professional Teaching License in the Commonwealth of Virgina. I have 18 years of experience teaching in Private and Public Schools in Northern and Central Virginia and will be happy to provide a current resume.
I am a Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist and I seamlessly integrate Technology into every lesson I teach.
I look forward to the opportunity to work with your child. I have enjoyed the privilege of working with children either as a teacher or coach since I was 16 (or as I like to think of it, a lot of hair ago).

After a lot of searching for a suitable tutor for our gifted son, we selected John.
John is working fantastically with our son as a tutor, teacher, mentor, and coach. He has the ability to connect on many levels and in many ways. He is enthusiastic about working in concert our son's teachers. His desire to do so ensures that his tutoring dovetails with the school's advanced curriculum, lesson plans, and targeted learning outcomes.
Our son enjoys his tutoring time and is achieving goals in areas in which he used to struggle.
Update as of 10/1/14: It is so wonderful to have John back working with our son! John has really connected with our son and our son looks forward to the time he spends learning new things, picking up techniques, and honing his skills. John goes above and beyond expectations, is very highly qualified and talented, and it's clear he truly cares about our son's academic success and advancement.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

No one of the face of this planet loves, or knows more about the game of baseball than I!
My Dad took me to my first professional game in August of 1966 at Yankee Stadium.
I have coached baseball since I was 16 in Little League and Base Ruth. I was also the paid Head Coach of the Short Pump Middle School Baseball Team from 2000-2003. Currently, I coach my youngest son as part of Chesterfield Baseball Clubs.
While I do not have any formal coaching experience in this sport (I will be coaching for the first time this year.) I am a huge fan of the game, on both the professional and college levels.
I am currently training with Club Z! Championship Chess. Our goal is to work with elementary and middle schools throughout Chesterfield County in an effort to establish after school chess programs.
Students who master chess have improved dramatically in Math.
I have taught every grade level, from JK-8 during my 18 year career as a public and private school educator.
I have coached football on an off since I was 16. I am an expert in this sport! I am a multi-time Fantasy Football Champion and my ability to analyze football rivals any professional announcer in broadcasting. This is not an exaggeration.
During the 80's, I was a "disc jockey" for a free form FM station. During that time, I immersed myself in music history, specifically the history of rock and roll. I am particularly adept at recognized songs, titles, artists, and the years the songs were released. I would also consider myself an expert on the music and life of Bruce Springsteen.
I am the proud owner of a Canon Sure Shot 35 MM camera with a lense the size of Nebraska. I specialize in sports/action photography and outdoor photography.
I have also been a paid photographer at several weddings.
I have taught the SOL's in every public school I have taught in since 1992. Even when I was teaching at the Millwood School, we still used Chesterfield County Public School SOL's as the framework for our curriculum. I know them like the back of my hand, and I know how to teach them so that children pass the test.
Throughout my 18 years in education, I worked very closely with my students regarding study skills.
Each one of my children received a "Study Checklist" prior to every quiz or test. For documentation purposes, each child was required to attach the checklist to every quiz or test as testimony to the amount of time spent preparing for the evaluations.
