About Mark

Currently I am a sales and marketing professional, as well as a dedicated Toastmaster. Formerly an elementary teacher, I have also acted in community theatre and performed Improv.

I get most excited teaching Math, History, and drama, but dearest to my heart is taking someone who is afraid of public speaking and watching them transform before my eyes. I have made this change myself and regularly compete at speaking competitions.

I have tutored HS Algebra, taught 5th and 6th grades, but enjoy teaching at all age levels, especially motivated adults.

Facilitating the exchange of ideas, being part of a learning process and engaging people in purposeful thought is my greatest reward.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have done Algebra since advanced math in Seventh Grade. I last tutored a HS student in Algebra nine years ago, but tutor my daughter in pre-algebra and recently passed the WyzAnt qualifications test.

The students I've seen who struggle with Algebra often are weak with their times tables and carrying out the longer directions on word problems. This can be corrected.

Elementary (K-6th)

After earning a Master's Degree in elementary education (Wilmington College, DE), I spent four years as a self-contained elementary school teacher. I was employed by Westmoreland County schools in Virginia. I taught at an Elementary school (5th grade) in the mid-1990's.

Elementary Math

I taught Math for fifth grade for four years, sixth grade for one.

I also have tutored my daughter for the SOL's and have helped her reach an advanced placement.

Public Speaking

I have done seminars on PowerPoint (Toastmasters area groups), Improvisational Comedy (church youth groups), and Relationships (church adult small group). I have been doing product demos and sales presentations professionally for the last three years. I have a Master's Degree in Education with six years teaching experience. Lastly, I compete in speaking contests and have reached the district level for Toastmasters District 66.

Social Studies

A lifelong history buff, I have written a book about George Washington titled "The Tao of George." I will gladly email you a PDF copy. I have taught social studies in both Grades 5 and 6.
My last tutoring job was helping a college student with a presentation on African studies.

Theatre

I have performed in community theatre for several years in the 1990's with the Westmoreland Players; even serving on the board. I have taken an acting workshop with the former head of Northwestern University's theatre department. I have also studied and performed Improvisational Comedy for over nine months (ComedySportz Richmond adult rec league). As a teacher, I have directed class plays.

Writing

I will be happy to show you examples of my writing: blogs, book, speeches, etc.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Great tutor for young students

Mark has been working with my son for about 2 months to help him overcome his fear of public speaking. My son is 10 years old. He enjoys working with Mark, and I often hear them laughing during the session so it has been a very good match. Mark has been wonderful; he has arranged for my son to speak at Toastmasters. My son's first speech was on July 24th, and it went very well. He will continue to
