About Matthew

Upon graduating from Penn State in 2011, I was not sure what I wanted to do in terms of my career. After bouncing through a handful of jobs for the first couple of years, I started working at C2 Education in the spring of 2013 and was hooked. I found that I had a passion for helping my students, and seeing them understand subject matters that they had previously been struggling with or watching them celebrate when they found out that they had gotten into their dream school became very rewarding.

Over the past three years, I have worked at C2 and taught as an adjunct at George Mason University. I am interested in transitioning into doing more private tutoring so that I can focus on each student as an individual and develop a lesson plan to target his or her specific academic needs.

Areas of expertise:
Algebra: Algebra is often the first time students are forced to think about math conceptually rather than simply memorizing a series of rules and steps. This transition process can be difficult for a lot of people, and I try to help the students see the big picture.

College essays: Personal narrative writing is challenging for many students because it is a deviation from the traditional five paragraph, academic essay that they are typically writing in school. Though the goal is to brag about themselves, I help the students understand the difference between listing their achievements in a series of sentences that all begin with the word "I" and telling a story that shows off both their writing prowess and exemplary character.

Test prep: The trick to being successful on the SAT and ACT is not just having the knowledge, but also understanding the test. The major standardized tests each have a certain style, and, in my experience, I have found that it is essential not only to understand why the correct answers are correct, but also why the incorrect answers are incorrect and identify the different types of SAT/ACT "trap" answers. I help students build their academic knowledge bases and learn the test to put them in the best position to succeed.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
