Hello! My name is Patti, and I am a Thai native speaker. Fully bilingual in Thai and English and a trained foreign language instructor, I have taught Thai to and developed instructional and testing materials for English-speaking students since 2013.

A professional interpreter, I interpret for English-speaking professionals in the United States so they can communicate with Thai native speakers. In addition, I translate domain-specific documents, including national security and defense.

My teaching philosophy is to help Thai language learners achieve their goals. Be a scholar who wants to read Thai script in scholarly literature; be someone who simply wishes to learn a few basic words for an upcoming trip to Thailand, or a professional who needs to master the language to conduct business with Thai counterparts.

With a bachelor's degree in Political Science from Thammasat University in Bangkok and later a master's degree in International Transactions from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, I have worked in the fields of linguistic and cultural training and foreign affairs. My first teaching assignment started in 1988 as an ESL teacher with Save the Children. I taught basic American English to young refugees from Laos and Cambodia living in a United Nations refugee processing camp in Thailand, preparing them for culture shock upon their resettlement in the Midwest.

Besides English as a second language, I have studied other languages, including Sanskrit and Tamil. So I know how difficult one must go through to acquire proficiency in a foreign language. What I enjoy most is my role as a mentor who truly wants to see you thrive linguistically and develop your full potential.

Based in Maryland, I am available for online lessons.

As a Thai native speaker and trained foreign language instructor/material developer, I am pleased to help you learn Thai. Also, as a Thai who has mastered a couple of languages but failed some others, I understand what makes studying a foreign language a walk in the park or an uphill struggle. For beginners who want to focus on training the ear and learning to pronounce Thai words, we can begin with greetings, simple grammar, tones, high frequency words, and relevant culture notes. This suits casual travelers to Thailand. I’m also happy to work with more serious learners who are interested in reading written Thai and expressing more complex thoughts. I can develop reading and listening materials from open source for you to gist and answer questions related to the topic. At the same time, we will amp up your mastery of Thai grammar and low frequency vocabulary. And my ILR numbers? ILR 5/5 in reading and speaking, highest for in-person, oral proficiency interview (U.S. Department of State Foreign Service Institute). ILR 3 in reading, highest on computer-adaptive testing platform (Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center). Welcome to the Land of Smiles! I look forward to sharing the beauty of the Thai language with you.

Knowledgeable, caring, patient, efficient, helpful teacher!

Patti is one of the best language teachers I've had. She's funny, understanding, and so so good at putting together a program for you to learn that is perfect for you. I enjoyed all my lessons with her. She was so well-versed in both American and Thai culture and that helped me prepare. Her lessons are efficient and she's amazing at teaching - not something that comes easily. She communicates well and is one of the best tutors I could have asked for! Definitely take lessons from Patti!

Great tutor - easy to connect

Patti started me on basic Thai expressions. She looked over some of my past lessons and found a good starting point for a short course in Thai that is directly linked to my requirements. she is friendly and patient, a good listener and gives cultural and social context as well as language.

Exactly What I Was Looking For

Patti has a great proficiency in both English and Thai. She accommodated our request to work with two students at the same time. My friend and I are both at different proficiency levels. I am a heritage speaker (my parents are both Thai so I learned to speak Thai at home), but I don't read and write very well. My friend is Filipino, but he learned Thai through the Defense Language Institute. Patti formed a lesson that could test both of our skills and she gave us each homework that was suited to our levels. She was patient and very helpful. I'm looking forward to working with Patti again next week.
