I am Kelly. I have a bachelor's in business management and education. I also have extensive classes in accounting and have completed about half of my master's in library science. I have five years of substituting experience at all grade levels and ten years of teaching experience at the middle school level. I teach middle school English at all three grade levels and teach writing at the eighth grade level as well as Civics. My best memories of going to school is not filled with the teachers who were the most prepared. It is filled with the teachers who were the most compassionate, the ones who cared. I hope and I try to incorporate both in my classroom. I love my students! I am prepared with lessons that are geared towards the curriculum. I teach the lesson; I model the lesson; the students and I then perform an example of the lesson together; the students perform an example with partners; and then once the lesson is mastered, the individual student masters the lesson. If there is a need for remediation, centers are set up for that. There is plenty of time in my classroom to read and much emphasis placed on reading!
I have tutored after school for ten years in English and Writing. Normally, this means the students who have signed up for tutoring are students who I already have a pretty good grasp of where they are and what they need. I am ready for them and have prepared individual lessons for each student, based on their testing and classroom results. As they work, I go from one student to the next helping them when they have difficulty.
I also tutored this past year with a high school junior who I taught in the sixth and eighth grades. I tutored him in English and Writing as well as Social Studies. He has some learning disabilities so my purpose was to keep him up to date with all of his homework and to keep his grades up as well as help him with any difficulties he was having. He was required to take a Virginia SOL (state test) in English and Writing. His learning disability relates to short-term and long-term memory. We studied and practiced many hours and he passed both Sols!! He was thrilled and so was I!
Seeing my students become successful is my top priority, plus it gives them so much confidence. Their grades will also improve with that confidence. I can't tell you how exciting it is to see that light bulb come on when they understand something. I will be easy to reach and will provide fast responses.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
