About Sara

I am a teacher who works with students ages 5-14 teaching them computer skills, programming, engineering, and science skills. In the past I have worked with students at children's science museums, science themed camps, and in after-school programs.

I am also an experienced tutor working with school aged students as well as adult learners. I have worked with students with English, writing, and test taking skills. I also assist with paper writing and editing at both the school and college level.

I hold a BA in anthropology and an MA in GIS and Data Science.

I apply Montessori principles mixed with guided study practices to try and match a child's education needs with their learning style. I find using a mixed approach is best with many students allowing us to identify areas for improvement while reinforcing areas of strength.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I have BA in Anthropology from Indiana University. I graduated in the to 10% of my class. I also headed up the Anthropology club in college. This clubs major outreach was to help other students understand and practice anthropology in college. I also was a TA to the chair of the Anthropology department at IUPUI. So, I am familiar with helping adult students understand anthropological concepts and practices.

Archaeology

After graduating from IU, I spent 10 years in the field working in Archaeology both in CRM and academically. I have worked with archaeology interns at the State of Indiana DNR, as well as in the field itself. I also maintain a blog, that not only debunks bad archaeology, but teaches modern concepts and practices.

Public Speaking

I am a Toastmaster in my spare time. I have presented several times at National conferences for Archaeology, (MAC, SHA's). I have presented on television, radio, podcasting, as well as in person before a live audience. I am very comfortable assisting people in learning how to speak comfortably before groups, as well as showing them ways to make their presentation more powerful.

Reading

I've spent several years tutoring students in grade school, high school, and college. I have assisted students with learning disabilities and students who are simply trying to increase their reading skills. I have worked with students who have English as a second language as well as native speakers. I am familiar with study skills as they apply to teaching dyslexics and other reading related learning issues.

Writing

I've been published academically and in regular print. I'm a fan of fiction, but have a strong understanding of academic level writing.
