Hello! I have been privately tutoring Mathematics and associated topics (e.g. physics, computer science) for over ten years. I have a BS in computer science with a minor in Mathematics from Penn State University (1995) and a MS in computer science from George Mason University (2000). I have been involved with engineering, problem-solving, software development, systems development, and mathematics for almost 20 years, including writing the first Java book during the nascent days of Cloud Computing (Semantic Web). I love seeing students get the "A-ha" moment, when a concept finally clicks and he/she realizes that it all makes sense!

I work with children of all ages (K-12) as well as adults; I look forward to meeting new students and helping them understand math since it is a struggle for so many. Parents are always welcome to sit in on any and all sessions until mutual trust is established. All of my tutoring sessions are at a public space in Manassas that is both conducive to study as well as safe and comfortable to get work done.

As far as my teaching approach, I create customized programs to help you or your child excel - there is no single math approach that works for every child since there are different learning styles and different issues that students grapple with at different points in time. As a sample, I use targeted homework assignments, specialized mnemonics and conceptualization to name a few. Don't give up hope! So many times there are different ways to learn and understand Math and it can be as easy as looking at a tough problem from a new angle.

Linux,

Linux

As a BS in Computer Science and a MS in Computer Science, I have been using Linux for over 20 years. I have experience on all sorts of Linux operating system variants such as CentOS, Ubuntu and RedHat. I use Linux everyday, in areas such as shell scripting (e.g. C shell, bash, etc...) and file browsing. My personal web server is running on a Raspberry Pi device running Raspbian, a Debian Unix/Linux variant, that I installed, configured and manage myself.

-Tutored Algebra II for 10 years -Mentored 4 of my children in Algebra II -Able to teach various methodologies in understanding Algebra II concepts
Calculus,

Calculus

I have been tutoring students in Calculus (up to AB) for over 10 years. I have taught not only my own children but those in my area with a passion! Calculus is not as difficult as most people think; if you have a good handle on Algebra, I'd love to help you succeed here as well.
Geometry,

Geometry

Geometry tutor with time-proven techniques to conquer plane and solid shapes, areas, volumes, angles and the oft-dreaded proofs. I have successfully helped many students overcome their fear in geometry using mnemonics, Euclidean fundamentals and to-the-point approaches I can share with you.
Physics,

Physics

If you feel comfortable with algebra, I can help you succeed in Physics - it isn't as bad as you think. I use mathematic fundamentals (including Calculus if you are ready), logic-based techniques and real-world examples to understand that science behind it all. From my own homeschooled children to private and public students, I have helped those who thought they couldn't succeed.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

One of my first subjects I tutored, prealgebra has been one of my favorite areas of mathematics. I have tutored my own homeschooled children as well as dozens of others for over twelve years. Let me provide you a deeper understanding and confidence though mnemonics and repeatable approaches I have used for years.
Precalculus,

Discrete Math,

Discrete Math

Discrete Math (DM) deals with applying math to distinct/unique/separate values/objects and is used in areas such as graph theory, propositional logic, predicate logic, sets, relations, and functions. As a CS major and Math minor, I have taken courses that have directly and indirectly used DM. I wrote a book on Semantic Web programming, which relies heavily on graphs, graph theory and logic-based systems (both propositional and predicate logic such as the SPARQL query language are core subjects and were covered in the book). I have also had to teach DM to students in the past as well as apply it at work (algorithms, their implementations, and efficiencies such as big "O" notation) throughout my career as a computer scientist.

Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra

As a CS major and Math minor during my undergraduate years, I took courses dealing with Linear Algebra: vectors, linear transformations, matrices, eigenvectors and eigenvalues. While I've only tutored several students in this area, it is not one that is difficult to master. One exception: solving linear systems (handling more than one linear equation with multiple variables and finding solutions for all variables for all given equations) is an area I've taught extensively in the past eight years. For work as a computer scientist, I've done a lot of work with matrices as they align very strongly with working with arrays (single arrays, n-sized arrays, etc...)
Logic,

Logic

As a CS major and Math minor, I have taken multiple courses in logic as it is a foundational topic for programming. I wrote a book on Semantic Web programming, which relies heavily on logic-based systems. Specifically, both propositional and predicate logic, such as the SPARQL query language, are core subjects and were covered in the book. In addition, OWL (Web Ontology Language) is a logic-based language that uses Description Logic (DL) in part and was also covered in my book.

Probability,

Probability

I have tutored students in probabilities and statistics for almost a decade. Understanding probabilities doesn't have to just be the memorization of formulas. I can help you learn alternate approaches, apply mnemonics and utilize real-world examples that will make probabilities less daunting.

Trigonometry

I have been a private tutor for over a decade in the area of Trigonometry. With a basic understanding in Algebra, I can provide the same help to you that I've given dozens of students over the years. My techniques, mnemonics and application of real-world approaches will deepen your understanding beyond the classroom.

He is very patient and helpful

Matt had helped me with my shell scripting. I really couldn't get a handle on some of my HW and he was very helpful. When I found out that a couple of things wasn't working out he went right out and helped me get it to work properly. It was great working with him.

Algebra 2

We met Matt for the first time today. Matt reviewed a study packet with my son, my son said he learned a lot and Matt was very good at explaining things. We are good to go for the next lesson.

Great tutor

Matt is knowledgeable and helpful in overcoming learning issues. My son's algebra grade is improving and he feels more confident about math.

Anna, 7 lessons with Matt

Knowledgeable and insightful

Matt has an intuitive teaching style; more like an informative conversation than a lecture or lesson. Our first session was very productive and enlightening.

Amazing Tutor!

Matt is a great tutor. My son needed help with his AP Calculus and Matt really knows the topic and was very patient. They worked problems together and Matt coaxed my son to get him to figure out the answers rather than just supplying the answers for him. I only wish we had found Matt 2 months earlier and that he had more time available for tutoring. He was a hundred times better than the previous tutor we had.

Excellent Tutor

** UPDATE: My daughter just received her very first B on a Math test. I seriously attribute this to Matt and his ability to not only relate to my daughter but to also tutor her in a way she understands. Matt rocks and my daughter is beginning to build her confidence because of him! My 14 year old daughter has always struggled in Math and it is so bad this year that we decided on a tutor for her. Matt has been amazing... he is understanding, yet fun and Alex feels just a bit more confident now. We are going to continue using Matt because he takes the time to listen to Alex and help her understand the what's and why's of math (Geometry).

Extremely Knowledgeable and Helpful!

Matt is always punctual, patient, and extremely helpful! We have been 100% pleased with him and very impressed with his extensive knowledge of the subject matter as well as his competence and ability to teach in a thorough and pleasant manner. HIGHLY recommend Matt!

Awesome Tutor!

I am so thankful for having Matt as my tutor for both my math and physics courses. I really like how he really takes his time to make sure you understand a certain topic during a session. I am taking Vector Calculus and University Physics this semester and I was so scared that I wasn't going to find the right tutor to really help me get the grades that I want. Ever since our first session, I knew that this was the kind of tutor that I needed to help me get the grades that I want. If you want to have a really good math and/or science tutor, I HIGHLY recommend taking this person as a tutor.
