About Elise

Hello!

Thank you so much for reading my profile. I am excited to help with your learning needs in any way I can. I bring a positive attitude, upbeat personality, and excellent work ethic. I am currently employed full-time at Browne Academy as the Assistant Director of Admission. I hold a Bachelors degree in Music and a Master's in Early Childhood Special Education. I also hold a teaching license in the District of Columbia.

Working with children has been a part of my life since I was old enough to begin babysitting. I was a nanny for a year in Chicago to two wonderful children- a 3 year old boy and a 6 year old girl. I often would assist the first grader with her homework assignments when she had difficulties. I also taught the 3-year old his letters, how to write his name, and beginning literacy elements. While a nanny, I also babysat two children down the street, a 4 year old girl and a 7 year old boy with diabetes. I love kids because of the energy they give off and their excitement about everything in this world.

I have experience with large numbers of children as I was a camp director two summers in a row for children ages 8-12. I have experience with children of all ages from infancy to age 15 and love watching them learn and grow through each stage of their development. The most rewarding aspect of working with children is to see them discover the world around them, and help foster their knowledge.

I have experience working with physically and developmentally disabled children. I was a literacy tutor for children with Down syndrome and have also worked with pre-teens and teenagers with various developmental disabilities through the work of SPRED in Chicago.

I have worked in a first-grade classroom, as well as a preschool classroom. Currently, I direct the middle school musical and enjoy working with the older kids as much as the little ones. Making a difference in any child’s life is of the utmost importance to me and I hope to continue to do so throughout my life and career.

I am an excellent editor when it comes to proofreading writing assignments. I understand how important each step of the writing process is and would help to break them down for any struggling students.

I like to meet students where they are reading level wise so we can work upward from there. Again, having a baseline is extremely important. I have a musical theatre background, so, when applicable, I enjoy bringing drama into the storytelling aspect of reading. This helps children with reading comprehension, and makes it a fun activity for those who are resistant.

I have worked directly with children with Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia & Downs syndrome. I also have strong phonics training and reading intervention training through my Master's program.

I hold a Bachelor of Music in Musical Theatre. I am trained in voice, music theory and sight singing. I can sight read piano chords and am extremely enthusiastic about music and the arts in general!

I started dancing when I was 3 years old and seriously dancing at the age of 7. I continued with my dance training through my undergraduate program, dancing every day for at least 3 hours a day (ballet, tap, jazz, modern, theatre dance, pointe).

I am an avid supporter of fitness and staying active. I think it is especially important for children to remain active in order to increase their brain power. I work out about 4 times a week (running, yoga, kickboxing, weight training).

I am also very well-read in the world of admissions. In my role as Assistant Director of Admission at an independent preschool through grade 8 school, I interface with families and children of all backgrounds. I administer various assessments with the kids and determine their appropriate level. Working in the college realm for three years, I obtained an inside look as to how college admissions works. I continued my interest in college admission through an outside reader position. I am eager to assist high school students as they begin their college search process, working with them throughout this exciting journey. There are many elements which go into the college application process- interviewing, essay writing, test prep, application highlights, the list goes on- and I am confident I can ease any stress that comes with the extensive process.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or requests you may have. I look forward to working with you to help you achieve your learning goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have assisted individuals with standardized test preparation including the ACT, SAT and GRE. I worked as a college admission reader and am familiar with the scoring of each test. I have various techniques I can share with my students that will help them approach each section of the ACT.

ADHD

I hold a Master's degree in early childhood special education. I have worked with a handful of students with ADD and approach each from an individual basis according to their needs, skills and challenges. I've worked with various coping skills and methods in order to increase concentration and meet the students where they are. I believe strongly in working with each child's strengths and comfort levels so I do not expect all kids to sit completely still all the time. Some students learn better when they are allowed to wiggle around a bit or lay on their stomach while they work.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I hold a Master's degree in early childhood special education. I have worked with a handful of students with Autism and approach each from an individual basis according to their needs, skills and challenges. I completed a research paper on Autism and learned a great deal through my research. I recently submitted a literature review about the effects of Drama therapy on social skills and communication development in children with Autism.

Ballet

I have an undergraduate degree in musical theatre. I trained in dance, including ballet, for over 10 years.

Bible Studies

As a child, I participated in Sunday School each week. My parents ran the lesson planning and organization so I grew up around it. I attended The Catholic University of America for my undergraduate degree, which included multiple theology courses. I continue to study the bible myself each day and teach the stories to my younger nephews.

Career Development

I have worked closely with near college graduates and adults as they embark on their career journey. I have experience primarily with resume development, cover letter construction, and interview and presentation skill enhancement. I take pride in helping individuals find their confidence and ability to highlight their strengths as they begin their career journey.

College Counseling

I'm currently an Assistant Director of Admissions. I was Enrollment Coordinator at Catholic University of America for 3 years. I am currently an Outside Reader for George Washington University.

Dyslexia

I hold a Master's degree in early childhood special education. I have extensive reading intervention training through this program that focused on working with children with various reading hindrances. For one assignment, I worked with a girl with dyslexia on improving her reading skills, comprehension and confidence.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold a master's degree in Early Childhood Special Education. Throughout my program, I worked with students from preschool through fifth grade.

English

My Master's in Early Childhood Special Education coursework involved numerous English instruction courses with major focus on reading and writing. Throughout HS, I took all honors and AP English courses, continuing through college.

Fitness

I love working out! I danced my entire childhood and continue to stay active throughout my adult years. I run 5Ks often, kickbox, and lift.

I enjoy eating healthy as it is important and helps me to feel great!
As a type 1 diabetic, I learned to count carbohydrates at an early age. This helps me to track my eating habits as they go along with my workouts.

I have started to read through a Personal Training Manual in the hopes of becoming certified in the near future.

Music Theory

I have a Bachelor of Music. I completed four years of college music theory.

Phonics

Within my masters program, we focused a great deal on literacy training. A large portion of this stems from phonics. I learned different skills and techniques to use when approaching phonics with children. Phonics are crucial in the development of future skills, such as reading, so it is important that students develop a strong understanding of how to hear and produce various phonemes. This will make it easier to distinguish between different sounds and associate similar sounds, helping to develop strong readers and writers.

Proofreading

I have experience with writing assistance, primarily essays and reports, from initial outlines through the proofreading and final editing process. I've worked with students from elementary level through grad school.

Reading

I have a Masters in early childhood special education, and training in Reading A-Z.

Sight Singing

I have a Bachelor of Music degree. I completed Sight Singing levels I-IV.

Special Needs

I am obtaining my Master's degree in early childhood special education. I was a literacy tutor for children with downs syndrome. I also worked closely with children with physical and intellectual impairments through SPRED.

Study Skills

I am extremely organized myself and enjoy sharing my organizational and study skills with people. If you struggle with study skills, you present yourself with an even bigger challenge to succeed in subjects. I helped my sister and some of my friends learn the best approaches to planning their time according to what tasks were on hand. From there, we worked on which subjects needed focus and the best angle from which to approach them. I like teaching people study skills because it really is the first hurdle toward accomplishing goals. I am currently completing my master's degree in Early Childhood Special Education. Throughout my program, I've worked with students from preschool through fifth grade.

Voice (Music)

I have a Bachelor of Music in Musical Theatre. I have taken voice lessons for the past 18 years.

Writing

I have experience with essay writing assistance from initial outlines through the proofreading and final editing process. I've worked with students from elementary level through grad school.
