I am a fully licensed teacher in the state of Virginia with ten years of teaching experience. My teaching experience includes Chemistry, AP Chemistry, IB Chemistry, World History and IB History courses. I have tutored students since I was 14 years old.
After teaching all levels of chemistry from the basic SOL required course to AP and IB SL/HL courses I can help you/your child understand and learn to appreciate their chemistry class. I have also worked with students to prepare for their SAT II in chemistry, with many students earning perfect scores.
I also have taught History, working with many students learn how to interpret primary sources, analyze documents and write in-depth essays.
I am passionate about helping students feel involved and interested in their classes. Their is nothing worse than feeling a class happening around you, without being able to participate. I will help you learn the tools and skills necessary to be an active member of your education. Need help with your high school or college coursework? Megan L. helped my struggling daughter move from confusion to command of buffer solutions (perhaps the most challenging topic in AP Chem) in one tutoring session. Terrific!
Megan has been very patient with our daughter. She takes time to make sure she understands the concept before moving to the next concept. Megan listens to Catherine and presents the material in the way that Catherine can understand. Grades have improved after only 3 sessions.
Megan is the one we are really happy with. Megan makes AP Chemistry easier. After two lessons my daughter's grade became better. We highly recommend her.
Super helpful and productive sessions are what you can expect with Megan. She really put in the extra effort prior to our sessions to provide me with the necessary tools to succeed. Highly recommend!
Megan is such a wonderful tutor. My son feels like he is starting to understand Chemistry and feels more comfortable! This has built up his confidence.
So glad we found Megan!!!
Greatest tutor ever - kind, patient and best of all knowledgeable - can explain so that you understand. Thankful we found Megan L.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught chemistry for 10 years, 6 years in the state of Virginia. I have taught in the public school system all of my career, working with students of all ability levels and helping them achieve the highest pass rates on the SOL in our school.
I have also worked with students in AP and IB chemistry for 8 of my 10 year teaching career. While in college I tutored students in Chemistry 120 (the advanced sequence) and Organic chemistry.
At university I majored in history and even spent one semester studying abroad in Europe, developing a true appreciation for European history. As a teacher in a public high school I have taught World History and IB world history for 3 years. I have experience working with students and helping them understand the subject and learn to apply that knowledge.
I have taught IB HL chemistry for 8 out of the last 10 years. In this coursework one quarter every year is dedicated to Organic chemistry, including the following:
Reactions: Combustion Reactions; Addition reactions to alkenes and alkynes; Hydration reactions; Halogenation reactions; Hydrohalogenation reactions; Dehydration reactions (Basic elimination reactions), acylation (meta vs ortho vs para directors)
Isomers: Geometric, Stereoisomers
Sn1 vs Sn2 reactions
In addition to teaching my regular students I have tutored Organic chemistry students in their college coursework which contains a bit more detail.
As a state licensed and currently active public school teacher I am very well versed in the state requirements and set up of the SOL. I have prepared my students for and proctored the Chemistry SOL 5 times. My students have achieved the highest SOL pass rates in our school for the past 4 years.
The state requirements for Chemistry are broken down into 5 basic sections. The Chemistry test consists of 60 questions. 10 of these are "field" questions that will not count in the final score. To pass a student must achieve around a 55%. To pass advanced a student must achieve a 90%.
