About Paige

I look at tutoring as an opportunity for gathering up the loose ends in a student's grasp of English. My background education and work experience qualifies me for the job. A Bachelor of Arts in English from William and Mary and an M. A. in English from the University of Richmond formed the basis for my teaching career at a large suburban high school in Henrico County, Mills E. Godwin. I taught there for three decades and during my tenure have been assigned classes ranging from ninth through twelfth grades. Outside of regular school classes I have taught SAT review courses and have read essays for the AP literature exam. I am a mother, a grandmother, and have coached high school sports so have had vast experience with high school students.

Before I taught full time I taught homebound students for three years. I would meet with each student and one-on-one delve into the work they were having trouble with. If it were a particular novel we would read and discuss it, I would ask questions and he or she would come up with questions on her own. If required I would test and quiz the student on what he or she had read. The other parts of English--grammar, usage, and writing--would be included in the lessons also. Whatever prose and poetry the teacher had assigned I would include in the lessons as springboards for these other elements. In all, I would be knitting together the elements that were troubling each student into an understandable whole.

If I were your tutor, these are the methods I would use to get you back on track in English. The reading, the discussing, the questions, the answers will all form the avenue to your success in the subject.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
