About Kyle

I began my musical journey at the age of six. In my high school years, I began to study Music Theory. As I entered Liberty University to study Music and Worship, I continued my study and grew in my understanding of theory as the Head Grader and Tutor for the Music and Worship department. Upon graduation, I pursued a Master's degree at Liberty and served as a GSA (Graduate Student Assistant) for two years. Having just finished by Masters degree, I have accepted a one-year teaching appointment as music theory and aural skills professor.

I have been tutoring students in music theory and aural skills for over 5 years. In 2010 I began tutoring undergraduate students in a bi-weekly group format and one-on-one sessions. From 2013 to 2015, as part of my GSA position, I assisted music faculty, taught my own course, and tutored students as needed. During these part 5 years, I have had interactions with several textbooks including The Musician's Guide to Theory and Analysis, The Practice of Harmony, Music Theory for the Music Professional, The Jazz Theory Book, The Nashville Number System, Graduate Review of Tonal Theory, and several anthologies. In addition, I have a strong background in popular music studies and the incorporation of non-traditional musical genres into tutoring and teach techniques. I graduated Suma Cum Laude with a B.S. in Music and Worship and graduated Master's of Arts in Music and Worship (GPA 4.0) this past May. I love to teach and want to see everyone come to a better understanding of Music Theory.

Please contact me to see if I might be able to help. I hope to hear from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

I currently teach ear training at the collegiate level. I have tutored students in this area for roughly 6 years. I am familiar with many different perspective of ear training, but favor methodologies that develop relative pitch as related to a tonal center. I also transcribe songs for a local publishing company as needed.
