About Nelson

I have 20 years of experience teaching languages and working successfully with native and foreign language students. As a learner of a foreign language myself (English is my third language), I understand the struggles that a person goes through in the process of learning a foreign language and the effort that it takes to become truly fluent. But it shouldn't be all pain, it can also be fun. It all depends on how much desire a person has and their willingness to be successful in achieving their goal.

I taught English as a Second Language for 10 years at different levels: pre-school, elementary and secondary schools, in Paraguay, South America, and here in the United States. I have a TESOL (Teaching English to Students of Other Languages) Certificate from Liberty University and I am currently pursuing my Masters degree in Teaching English as a Second Language & Linguistics at George Mason University.

Teaching is my professional career. I taught Intermediate Spanish as an adjunct professor at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, and I am currently a teacher of Spanish 1-5 and English as a Second Language high school level in Central Virginia, where I live.

Define your goal and purpose for why you want or need tutoring, be it for your child in elementary & middle school, or for your high school or college level success, for a short term mission trip to a Latin American country, for a business or for a job related opportunity, or simply for a vacation plan that you have, and together we will design a face to face, in person or online tutoring program that will fit your needs!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I took English as a Second Language (ESL) classes since I was in 7th grade all the way until I graduated from high school back in Paraguay, South America, my country of origin. Six years total. I finished a 3 year program of English for Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) at the Paraguayan-American Cultural Center before I moved to the United States to advance my Education. I graduated from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia with a major in Spanish and a TESOL certificate. I took English and Linguistic classes as part of my major and certificate program. Now I am pursuing my Masters degree in Linguistics through George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.

Spanish

I am a native Spanish speaker from Paraguay, South America and I have been teaching Spanish 1-5 in high schools here in the US for 10 years. I also taught intermediate Spanish as an adjunct professor at Liberty University.

TOEFL

I know what it is having to take the TOEFL exam. I had to take this test in order to attend college in the United States. I took it at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan as soon as I came to make my residence in the US 15 years ago and I passed it successfully. That allowed me to pursue my education in this country. I did my undergraduate studies majoring in Spanish and I earned an English as a Second Language certificate at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. I am currently pursuing my graduate studies in Linguistics/ESL at George Mason University.
