Hey, everyone! My name is Marcia, and I love to teach! My philosophy is simple: "If you make learning enjoyable, ANY child can learn"! I could probably teach Japanese to an Orangutan if you gave me the chance and enough time. That's because I've been teaching for over 30 years and have seen so many big wide "light-bulb" smiles. A "what" smile? A "light bulb smile!" is what all teachers live for. It's why we teach. It's why we work extra time planning and researching new activities or finding a new way to teach a student who is having trouble. It's the gratification we feel when a student has been struggling to comprehend a lesson, and then finally, like a light bulb, suddenly beaming 100 watts, the student gets it. It's the same look no matter who the child is, no matter where they come from: it starts with a big wide smile, then they straighten their back as their self-pride swells inside them, and finally a strong look of self-confidence fills their eyes because they did it, they got it...they understood. Knowledge is a powerful thing, and I'm an expert at teaching knowledge.
My background is full of experience. I have a Masters degree in Education certifying me to teach middle and elementary school. I also have experience teaching certain high school subjects. I have a special certification in general math and Special Education (both LD and ED), which gives me the understanding and patience needed to help students who are struggling in school. I have worked mostly with elementary and middle school children who have emotional difficulties and learning disabilities, even though I started out in the New York and Virginia public school system. I recently worked in an educational institution for nineteen years that was focused on students having special educational needs and where I incorporated many different behavioral modification systems into my lessons. In the past two years, I have tutored students in math and world history at a local private school. I have also taught regular, educational students in grades Kindergarten through 6th, in general math, and high school students in computer literacy.
As I stated before, I truly believe that any child can learn with the right amount of motivation, encouragement, modern teaching methods and activities, mixed with patience dedication and caring. I don't fail my students and always use teaching methods tailored to each student's own personal and unique learning styles. Every student is NOT the same, and thus, does not learn the same. I make sure each child feels special and finishes their tutoring sessions feeling encouraged to learn more.
Some of my most popular requests are to help children read. Many children come to me uninterested and completely discouraged about reading. With so many competing activities now-a-days, including TV, movies, video games, and non-reading, internet activities, it can sometimes be challenging to get children to read. I'm proud to say that I've been incredibly successful in this area. One of the many methods I use includes using the internet in an educational way to get students interested in reading. This also facilitates them to continue reading at home. A second method is incorporating one of my life's passions into my lessons. During the past 15 years, I have been active in using my Shetland Sheepdogs in educational programs, pet therapy, obedience, and even tracking. All my dogs have earned many titles in both the United States and Canada, and my best success has been with a "reading buddy" program I started doing many years ago Children, who may be shy or not interested in reading, pick a book of their choice and read to my dog. This has been incredibly successful for young readers and I look forward to continuing this program with new readers.
I know there are many choices out there for tutors, ranging from the 12th grader down-the-street, to big corporate tutoring agencies. I feel certain that the best tutoring for a child, of any age is a personal, uniquely designed program that encourages your child to learn, to enjoy learning and to, of course, be successful at learning. High school students and big corporations can't do that, but I can. Teaching is my passion. I will, not only, work diligently and attentively to make sure that your child finally achieves what they've been lacking in school, but I will also ensure that their entire attitude towards education and learning becomes a positive attitude and one that stays with them for the rest of their life.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
