About David

I am a fifth grade teacher with Fairfax County Public Schools, after several years of teaching third grade. I have previous experience as a special education teacher, also. During my time with FCPS, I have consistently ranked highly within the district in terms of both SOL test results and district measures. I have helped develop curriculum for the county, served as team leader, and am the social studies curriculum lead teacher at my school. Additionally, I have previously served as the math lead teacher for my building. Prior to teaching with FCPS, I worked with Charles County Public Schools, and tutored for two agencies in Rochester, New York.
As a teacher, my goal is to tailor instruction to best fit the needs of my students. I am a believer in the idea of multiple intelligences and learning styles, and ensure that I meet student learning styles. As a tutor, I will do everything possible to ensure that students receive the specific, targeted assistance that they need to succeed and thrive in the school environment.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have taught special education for three years, and am certified in New York and Virginia to work with students with special needs. I have had multiple students on my caseload with ADHD. As a classroom teacher, I have worked with multiple students with ADHD. Much of my special education coursework was geared towards working with students with ADHD, and due to my experience with high-incidence special education students in general, and students with ADHD in particular, consider myself well-prepared to help students find success.

Clarinet

I was a music major undergrad, who spent ten years studying the saxophone. After beginning college, I had the opportunity to learn clarinet, and quickly reached proficiency. While in college, I had the opportunity to perform using all four primary members of the saxophone family; as section leader for the wind ensemble, as a baritone and tenor saxophone player for the Big Band ensemble, and as a tenor, baritone, and soprano saxophone player for college musicals, including woodwind doubling books requiring me to play the clarinet, flute, and bass clarinet. As a clarinet player, I participated in collegiate juries, and studied clarinet through an instrumental conducting program. As an elementary teacher, I have volunteered my time to work with many new saxophone and clarinet players. My primary clarinet work would be with novice or intermediate players.

Common Core

I hold Virginia and New York certifications in elementary education. I have taught for six years in elementary school. At the current time, I am teaching third grade in a Virginia public school. While Virginia is not a Common Core state, our Standards of Learning (SOL) are based on the Common Core, and I have done extensive research on the development and implementation of the Common Core Standards.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

David is skilled at working with my two sons who have very different learning styles. One is able to quickly pick up his lesson and David is able to challenge him. My other son is slower to progress and learns with repetition. David is very patient and encouraging towards both of them. They both have made tremendous progress over the short time that we've been working with David.
