About Moire

Bio

I enjoy working with students one on one or in small groups. It is such an honor to meet so many students from around the world meeting new students and learn their history and teach them to tell their story.

I have a B.A. in Dramatic Art and a certificate in American Sign Language.

I have tutored low literacy adults and enjoy the discovery when someone 'gets it'. I also teach English as an Other Language to adults. Studies do not come easy for me, so I understand that sometimes...

Studies do not come easy for me, so I understand that sometimes people need extra help or a different viewpoint to understand something new. I find that many times students fall behind because they find the material dull. I believe in breaking complex problems into components to make the subject understandable.

My goal is to present material in a way that the student will understand the basics and be able to move to the next level with confidence.

Public Speaking

I have a BA in Dramatic Art and studied speaking skills, linguistics and phonetics in pursuit of a career in the theater. I have performed in numerous community theater and small professional theater productions of the years. I know (and can explain) techniques for improving speech quality and calming nerves when having to face a group.

Corporate Training

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

I teach ESOL by total immersion. I tailor each session to the needs and vocabulary of the student. I don't spend a lot of time explaining grammar, but use grammar and vocabulary to help students reach their goal. My training in theater arts has given me the tools to teach students American pronunciation as part of their vocabulary lessons. I have had the privilege to teaching ESOL to financial managers, journalists, pharmacists, accountants and other professionals. I always remember that my students are intelligent adults who have come to learn another skill. Most importantly, I believe that the learning experience for adults should not be a chore but something they look forward to each time that we meet.
Grammar,

Grammar

I love English grammar. Although the fashion is to promote fluency without focusing on how or why the language works. I teach students the basic eight parts of speech, then show students how each piece fits together with the others. I teach students how to make sure that subject/verb match and the importance of antecedents when using pronouns. My students learn that grammar is the foundation for their expressions, not simply rules that have no place in their communication. I teach students that grammar is a puzzle and my method is to show a student how to put the puzzle together to make many beautiful pictures.

I am a former volunteer with the Washington Literacy Council where I tutored low-literacy adults and trained other tutors on using the 'Wilson' method of reading. The Wilson method provides a structured way to using sounds to read and spell and also encourages students to write. The Wilson method is adaptable to all age levels and is great tool for those who wish to begin a life of reading pleasure.

One of the best I have ever seen

I have been taking lessons from Moire for more than three months. I have seen a lot progress in my write and vocabulary skills, which I need the most for my GRE test. Not to mention her kindness and her sense of humour, which made to overcome my lack of confidence. I definitely recommend her.

Wonderful English tutor

I have to say Moire is a wonderful tutor. First of all, she is quite knowledgeable and willing to answer your question and help you to search these questions if she does not know. Second, the class is funny. We had a lot of fun during the class. I enjoy the class beyond learning a language.

She paid attention to every detail. Loved it!

I'm a ESL student even though I'm been in the U.S. for many years. Moire has pointed out the mistakes that I made that I had no awareness about. For example: the numbers from one to ten, I need to spell them out. Love her teaching!
